Utah Valley Rallies to Defeat Idaho State 3-2

Pocatello, ID--Despite winning the first two games of the match, Idaho State couldn't hold on as Utah Valley State rallied for a 3-2 win over the Bengals Wednesday evening at Reed Gym.

Idaho State got out to an early 2-0 lead, taking game one 31-29 before winning game two 30-28. Utah Valley then fought back with three straight wins, defeating ISU 30-27 in game three, 30-24 in game four, and 15-6 in game three. With the loss, Idaho State falls to 3-6 overall, while Utah Valley improves to 5-3.

"We're a young team and we waiting for some leaders to emerge," said ISU head coach Mike Welch. "We need that leadership out on the floor, and right now we aren't seeing it. We need people to step up and take those roles."

Nikki Havens led Idaho State with a season-high 17 kills on 47 attacks. Emily Waldron helped with a career-high 16 kills with 13 digs for her second double-double of the season.

Zoe Beltz tied a career-high with 11 kills. Beltz was impressive at the net, connecting on the 11 kills with just four errors on 23 attacks for a .304 attack percentage. Freshman Ashlyn McDowell also reached double digits with 10 kills on 34 attacks.

Amanda Bevens piloted the Bengal offense, registering a season-high 48 assists. She also tallied 14 digs for her first double-double effort of the year. Defensively, Bri Beal fronted Idaho State with a match-high 28 digs.

Idaho State recorded a .163 attack mark, while Utah Valley earned a .213 attack percentage. The Bengals did out-block the Wolverines 11-9, but lost the kills battle 72-66.

Jessica Endres and Camie Manwill led Utah Valley State with 19 kills each.

"While it's tough to loose, we still have a lot of opportunities ahead of us, and we look forward to them," Welch said.

Idaho State continues play on the road this week as the team travels to participate in a tournament in Las Cruces, New Mexico Sept. 8-9.
