Offense, Defense Let Bengals Down as ISU Drops First Home Game 71-58 to Weber State

Jan. 25, 2007

Final Stats

Pocatello, ID --- David Patten led Weber State with 23 points, including several emphatic dunks, and the Bengals could get nothing going on either end of the court as they dropped their first home game of the season 71-58 to the Weber State Wildcats, as WSU moved within one game in the loss column of the Bengals.

The Bengals had no answer for Patten, who scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Unfortunately for ISU, they didn't have an answer for any of the other Weber State players either. The Bengals (10-10, 5-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the opening basket, but that would be their only lead as WSU ran off a quick 9-0 run. The lead climbed to 16-7 before an 8-0 run cut it to 16-15, but ISU would never get closer.

Weber State (13-9, 6-3) closed the half on a 14-1 run before David Schroeder was fouled on a three-pointer with no time left, and his three free throws cut it to 36-23 at the half. The Bengal defense then held Weber State to just one point over teir first six possessions of the second half, but all ISU could must was a John Ofoegbu layup. After Schroeder hit a three to make it 37-28, Dan Henry answered back with one of his own, and ISU never got within 10 until Akbar Abdul-Ahad hit a three with 1:04 left to make it 68-58.

The Bengals were bad offensively for the second straight game, this time going 20-of-65 from the field, and just 8-of-33 from three-point range, negating their 36-31 rebound advantage. Weber State, who seemingly never missed, were 27-of-50 for the game (.540) and 9-of-19 from three-point range (.474), effectively slicing up ISU's "Razor" defense.

Schroeder led ISU with 20 points, but they came on the expense of 20 field goal attempts. Ofoegbu added 13 and a team-high eight rebounds. Besides Patten's 23, Brody Van Brocklin had 14 and Dezmon Harris had 10.

NOTES: Attendance was 3,300 even ... the Bengals have dropped two straight in conference after winning their first five ... both teams committed only single-digit turnovers, with nine for Weber State and eight for Idaho State ... ISU's 17 offensive boards led to just eight points, while Weber State turned five offensive rebounds into seven points.
