Pocatello, ID- It took all five games, but the Idaho State Bengals outlast the Montana State Bobcats 3-2 (27-30, 30-24, 30-27, 24-30, 15-11) to pick up their first Big Sky win of the season. ISU breaks their nine game losing streak to improve to 4-15 overall and 1-7 in conference. Montana State loses their 10th consecutive game to fall to 1-19 overall, 0-8 in Big Sky.
Montana State got the early edge by winning game one. Idaho State then rallied to take the next two games. The Bobcats then fought to extend the match to a deciding fifth game where the Bengals were able to hang on for the victory.
Sarah Carson led the charge for the Bengals with a career high 15 kills, hitting .433 in the process. She also tied her career best in blocks with 7. Charlee Kinghorn picked up her second double-double of the week with 16 kills and 16 digs. Britta Bartschi reached double figure kills for the first time in her career by slamming down 13 of them. Emily Waldron fought off a heavily bandaged thigh to pick up 10 kills and 18 digs.
Patti Anderson and Nicole Grypiuk led the Bobcats with 15 kills each. Anderson also reached down for 17 digs. Sarah Allen recorded 59 assists.
Idaho State will now gear up for a busy week with three matches in the next seven days. It starts with a non-conference game against in-state rival Boise State on Monday. Then the Bengals will return to Big Sky play to face Eastern Washington on Thursday and Portland State on Saturday. All three matches will be at home in Reed Gym.
Notes: Jenna Proost had a lot to celebrate; the win came on her birthday... Idaho State's last conference win came in October 2006 when Montana State came to Pocatello... With the win, Mike Welch ties Jon Potter for third for coaching wins at Idaho State with 86.
