Final Stats
Cedar City, UT --- Idaho State University's soccer team traveled down to Cedar City, Utah seeking their first road win of the season, and they got it in record fashion, defeating Southern Utah 7-1 setting a school record for most goals in a game against a Division I opponent. The win pushed Idaho State's record to 5-3-3, and the Bengals enter conference play unbeaten in their last five matches (3-0-2).
Idaho State had gone to overtime in each of their last five matches away from Davis Field, where the Bengals are 4-0 this season and 7-0-1 in their last eight dating back to last season, but they put any notion of overtime to rest with a five goal second half outburst.
The Bengals got on the board 10:08 into the game when Karissa Henage scored her second goal off the season off an Annamarie Hofstetter corner kick. It was Henage's second goal of the season, the other also coming off a corner, that to tie Gonzaga. Jana Boehler struck just over six minutes later for the eventual game-winner, picking up a loose ball in the box for her team-leading fifth goal of the season, and third game-winner.
The Bengals effectively put the game away with three goals in a 13:49 span of the second half, with Chelsea Cox scoring two goals sandwiched around a Michelle Okamura strike. Cox's first goal and Okamura's were both headers off of corners, giving ISU three such goals in the game.
The Thunderbirds did strike back, as Kristen Fronk netted her first of the year, scoring on a direct kick past ISU keeper Maren Eves, who finished with six saves. The shutout gone, Eves gave way for the first time this season to freshman Kathryn Ford, who was busy in her 19 minutes with four saves.
The Bengals tied their record for most goals against a Division I opponent (set two other times, both against Southern Utah) when Natalie Graham scored into an open net after a bad goal kick. The Bengals then tied their all-time goals record when freshman Taylor Powell scored off a Jenny Ford pass into an open net. Idaho State had previously scored a 7-1 victory all the way back on August 27, 2000 against NAIA opponent Carroll College.
Holly Senter allowed five goals for the Thunderbirds before being replaced by Sutton Fox, who gave up the last two Bengal goals. ISU outshot SUU 23-19, and 14-12 on net. Idaho State now opens conference play next Friday night at Portland State at 8:00 pm Mountain Time before heading to Sacramento State on Sunday in a rematch of last year's Big Sky title game.
