Lubbock, TX --- The Idaho State Bengals played tough, but fall 86-72 to undefeated Texas Tech Thanksgiving night at United Spirit Arena. The Lady Raiders improve to 5-0 while the Bengals slip down to 1-2. This was the first game for both teams in the Basketball Travelers Classic tournament hosted by Texas Tech.
Natalie Doma led the Bengals with her third consecutive double-double to start the season. She had 21 points and 10 rebound the lead ISU in both categories. Andrea Lightfoot scored 17 points. Her season high nine rebounds added to a strong effort on the boards by the Bengals. Despite a size advantage for the Lady Raiders, Idaho State out-rebounded Texas Tech 42-41.
Associate Head Coach Gavin Petersen was impressed saying, "Maybe a light bulb went off in their heads that maybe we need to rebound as a team. We want to see that kind of effort every night."
Redshirt Freshman Bianca Cheever made her first career start. She struggled from the floor shooting 1-7 and scoring two points. Coach Petersen isn't too worried. "It will take a few games for her to get in the groove, but it won't take long for her to get caught up with the rest of the group. Give her a little time for that all around game to come around and when it does we will be really hard to beat."
Michelle Grohs played a solid game. She had 19 points when she fouled out with 6:51 remaining in the game. She was just shy of her career high of 20 which came last season against Utah Valley.
Idaho State took an early 4-2 lead in the first minute of the game, but Texas Tech never trailed after that. The Bengals pulled within one point at 24-23 with 8:56 remaining in the first half, but the Lady Raiders closed the half with a 26-13 run and the Bengals never recovered.
Senior Erin Myrick was dominant for the Lady Raiders. In only 22 minutes, she led Texas Tech with 20 points and eight rebounds. She shot 9-10 from the floor and 2-3 from the line.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Bengals as they continue the Basketball Travelers Classic with a 3:30 tip off Friday afternoon against Alcorn State. On Thursday, Alcorn State lost to Kennesaw State in their first game of the season. The Bengals will play Kennesaw State on Saturday.
