Final Stats
Lubbock, TX --- Idaho State, one game after a strong showing against Texas Tech, bounced back with a 61-53 win over Alcorn State in their second game of the Traveler's Basketball Classic in Lubbock, Texas. The Bengals got another double-double from Natalie Doma, and Bianca Cheever added 20 essential points as well in the best game of her freshman year.
The Bengals never trailed after the first media timeout, taking a 5-4 lead, their first, on a Michelle Grohs jumper at the 16:16 mark of the first half. However, it was Cheever who got ISU out of the gates, scoring seven of ISU's first nine points of the game, getting ISU out of the blocks quickly.
Alcorn State tied it at 13 with 9:24 left on a Kenesha Daniels jumper, but Grohs scored seven of ISU's next nine, and Alcorn State never really threatened again. ISU went into the break up 26-23, and quickly pushed that lead forward to 13 after back-to-back baskets by Doma made it 43-30 barely five minutes into the second half. Doma had a relatively quiet double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Said head coach Jon Newlee, who saw his team climb back to .500 at 2-2, "Natalie can roll out of bed and get a double-double."
However, it was the play of Cheever that was key for the Bengals. Said Newlee, "She came and brought it. When she settles her nerves down, this is the kind of game we expect from her."
For the game, the Bengals shot .381 from the field, and they limited Alcorn State (0-2) to shoot just .349 from the field and just .077 (1-for-13) from three-point range. ISU struggled a bit from three, going just 5-for-26 from three-point range (.192). Along with Doma's 23 and Cheevers' 20, Grohs was next with nine points, as just six players scored. Alcorn was lead by Shawntanee Collins, who had 19 points and nine rebounds, and Kenisha Daniels, who scored 10. ISU outrebounded the Lady Braves 45-37.
The Bengals will wrap up the Basketball Travelers Classic Saturday at 11:30 am when they tip off against Kennesaw State. It will be first meeting between these two schools.
NOTES: Andrea Videbeck left the game with an ankle injury, and will most likely sit out the Kennesaw State game ... ISU shot .800 from the field.
