Poor Second Half Hurts as Oregon State Defeats Idaho State 56-41

Nov. 23, 2007

Final Stats

Corvallis, OR --- Idaho State's men's basketball team had a 14-point first half lead and a seven-point halftime advantage, but the Bengals couldn't score in the second half, netting just 15 points, as the Oregon State Beavers kept ISU winless on the road, defeating the Bengals 56-41 at Gill Coliseum.

The Bengals (1-4) had the kind of solid start they were looking for, building a 14-point lead as last of Austin Kilpatrick's three first half three-pointers gave ISU a 22-8 lead at the 5:14 mark, and with 3:12 to go, a Lucas Steijn basket made is 24-10, but ISU would get outscored 9-2 to end the half. The second half was more of the same as the Beavers, who shot only .242 in the opening half got hot early, catching the Bengals at the 12:00 minute mark when Seth Tarver follow his own three-pointer with a go-ahead layup, and ISU never led again.

Kilpatrick, who had his best game of the season with 14 points and four threes, scored ISU's only basket in the midst of a telling 16-2 run that pushed the lead to 47-37 Beavers with 7:16 to go. Amorrow Morgan cut it to 47-39 with a jumper, and ISU forced three straight missed, but the Bengals couldn't get it done on the offensive end in between, and Tarver, who led everyone with 21 points, drained a back-breaking three, and it was academic from there.

Idaho State, along with Kilpatrick, got another solid game out of Lucas Steijn, who score 12 points, and Amorrow Morgan added 10. ISU however, was outrebounded 44-29, and the telling stat was on the offensive glass, as Oregon State grabbed 19 offensive boards to just four for the Bengals, and the Beaver outscored ISU on second chance points 14-0.

Tarver for the Beavers had 21, and Calvin Haynes and Sean Carter each had 10. Roeland Schaftenaar had 12 boards for Oregon State. ISU shot .400, and they held OSU to just .333 from the field, but the 19 offensive boards negated that stat somewhat. Oregon State was held to an 0-for-13 in the first half from three-point range, but they bounced back to hit 6-of-11 in the second half.

The Bengals do get a quick turnaround to try to exact a little revenge, and at Gill Coliseum to boot as ISU will face the University of Portland Pilots on Saturday afternoon in a game that had a slight time change, as it will now start at 6:30 pm Mountain Time. The game will air on the Bengals Radio Network, flagshipped at ESPN Radio 930 AM KSEI out of Pocatello. Russ Eisenstein will call the action, starting at 6:00 pm with the pregame show.

NOTES: The Bengals are now 0-13 over the last two years in true non-conference road games ... they are 1-0 in neutral games, which is what the Portland game on Saturday is ... Matt Stucki was held scoreless ... ISU has held three of their five opponents to 58 points or less in regulation ... Amorrow Morgan, who shot .196 last year, is shooting .500 from the field this year through five games ... Austin Kilpatrick's four threes gave him the team lead with eight.
