Pocatello, ID -- Andrea Lightfoot sparked a 13-4 run with a three in the corner as the Idaho State Bengals hold of Utah State 69-60 Wednesday at Reed Gym. With 2:31 remaining in the game, Lightfoot's three pointer broke a 56-56 tie and the Bengals never trailed again. Idaho State improves to 4-2 while Utah State is left looking for their first win at 0-5.
The Bengals took a nine point lead into the locker room at the break, but early in the second half the Aggies put up a fight going on a 12-0 run to take the lead. After the trading baskets for a few minutes, Lightfoot nailed the big shot that ignited the Bengals and the crowd.
"I was excited. I just had to shoot with confidence. I knew one would fall." Head Coach Jon Newlee added, "I thought it was a huge three at the time to get us going."
While Lightfoot's three shut the door, the Bengals free throw shooting locked it up. ISU went 8-8 from the line in the final two minutes to seal the victory. Jenna Brown, who made four of those, stated, "we practice them so much so it becomes second nature." The Bengals shot 15-19 from the line for the entire game.
Natalie Doma led the way with 26 points and 15 rebounds. She scored nine of the Bengals first 11 points in the game. Lightfoot scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. She shot 3-7 from beyond the arc. Brown also scored 15 points, tying her career high.
Lindsey Shipley, Taylor Richards, Danyelle Snelgro all scored 13 points for the Aggies.
The Bengals will head to Reno, Nevada on Saturday for the John Ascuga's Nugget Classic. Idaho State will face UCLA Saturday at 8 pm and then face either Nevada or Southern on Sunday.
Notes: With the win over Utah State, Jon Newlee ties the record for most coaching wins in Idaho State history with 77. He is tied with both Ardie McInelly and Ted Anderson... The Bengals outrebounded their opponent for the fourth straight game.
