Pocatello, ID--Andrea Lightfoot connected on a three-point shot at the buzzer to give Idaho State a 91-90 win over Portland State Saturday afternoon at Reed Gym. The win pushes the Bengals to an even 13-13 overall on the season, 9-5 in Big Sky play. Portland State falls to 10-17 overall, 6-8 in league play.
With 1.5 seconds remaining on the clock, Natalie Doma heaved a full court pass to Michelle Grohs at the top of the key. Grohs then passed the ball to an open Lightfoot, who drained the three at the buzzer from the right wing.
Lightfoot connected on a three to give the Bengals a 10-point lead, 85-75, with just 5:03 remaining. Portland State then rallied to score seven straight points to cut the Bengal lead to just an 85-82 advantage with 3:12 to play. PSU guard Clair Faucher hit a field goal to tie the game at 86-86 with 2:221 to go. Doma then countered with a turnaround jumper to tie the game at 88-88. Faucher then connected on a jumper with 1.5 seconds remaining to give the Vikings the 90-88 lead, setting up Lightfoot's buzzer-beating heroics.
"What more can you say," said ISU head coach Jon Newlee. "It was a great game to watch. I'm proud of the way we hung in there and didn't back down. You have to give Portland State a lot of credit. It was a great game."
Lightfoot and Doma led the Bengals with 24 points each. Lightfoot connected on 7-of-13 shots, including two threes. The junior guard was also perfect from the charity stripe, going 8-of-8. She also pulled down six rebounds.
With the 24 points, Lightfoot becomes just the 11th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Lightfoot now has 1,014 career points in less than two seasons. Lightfoot's career scoring average of 18.1 points per game is the top scoring average in school history.
Doma hit 9-of-17 shots from the field, including 6-of-6 from the free throw line. She also pulled down 16 rebounds for her 20th double-double of the season. Jeni Boesel recorded 19 points, while Kaylynn Fager helped with 11. Boesel also dished out eight assists.
Clair Faucher led Portland State with 22 points, while four others reached double figures.
Idaho State shot 46 percent from the field and 42 percent from three. ISU outrebounded PSU 42-35. ISU connected on 23-of-26 free throws for an 88.5 percent clip. ISU hit eight threes in the game--the 16th time this season that the Bengals have recorded eight or more threes in a single game.
Idaho State continues play at home on Thursday when the team hosts Weber State at 7:05 p.m.
