Bengals Softball Drops Season Opener 11-1 to BYU

St. George, UT--Idaho State softball opened play for the first time since 1983 Thursday afternoon, falling 11-1 to Brigham Young in the first game of the Red Desert Classic at the Canyons Complex in St. George, Utah.

Trailing 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Idaho State scored its first run of the season when Heather Dixon connected on a solo homerun. The Bengals then gave up five runs in the in the top of the fifth and were unable to score in the bottom half of the inning, forcing the 11-1 loss.

Dixon finished the game, going 2-for-2 from the plate with a homerun and a single. Also getting hits were Christine Shollenberger, Merissa Jannsen, and Nicole Antonoplos.

Kandis Clesson pitched four innings for the Bengals, recording two strikeouts and six earned runs. Dixon also recorded an inning at the mound for ISU.

Christina Gwyn picked up the win for the Cougars, pitching all five innings with just one earned run.

Idaho State continues play at the Red Desert Classic on Friday when the team faces Utah Valley State at 11 a.m.
