Final Stats
Moraga, CA --- Utah Valley State overcame an early 2-0 deficit, getting a sacrifice fly and a pair of unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings to defeat Idaho State 7-3 in the second semifinal game of the St. Mary's Invitational. The Bengals dropped to 2-17 on the season, and they finished the tournament 0-4.
The Bengals, who have played five road games and 14 neutral site games, will finally play a home game on Tuesday afternoon as they host Albertson College at Capell Park in Chubbuck.
The Bengals looked to be in good shape early as they pushed across a pair of runs in the first inning as Chris Shollenberger cranked a two-run home run to left field with two outs, her first of the season, and a hit that extended her hitting streak to five straight games. However, the lead quickly disappeared.
The Wolverines, who have now defeated the Bengals three times this season, got one back in the bottom half of the inning when Cherylyn McGraw singled home Jasmine Joyce, who walked to leadoff the game against Andrea Coburn. In the second UVSC took the lead with two runs on just one hit. A hit batter, a stolen base, an error and a walk loaded the bases with no outs, and Lindsay Boughton came in to relieve. She quickly got two strike outs but McGraw struck again, lining a two-run single to right field to give UVSC a 3-2 lead.
ISU fought back, tying the game in the fourth when Nicole Antonoplos, who entered the game batting just .175, tripled down the right field line, scoring Kylie Bronson, who had singled earlier in the inning.
UVSC however, took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Sara Roskelley, and they added three insurance runs in the sixth, all of which were unearned.
ISU had a good day at the plate from Shollenberger, who went 2-for-4 with a home run. Bronson and Marissa Jannsen were each 2-for-3. Shanna Schmitz, who didn't have a hit but scored a run, was the lone Bengal named to the All-Tournament team after hitting .364 for the tournament and playing nearly flawless behind the plate.
NOTES: ISU has had as many or more hits than their opponents in four of the last five games ... Shollenberger upped her average to .333, tops on the team ... Boughton has now struck out 58 in 65 innings.
