March 18, 2007

Final Stats

Sacramento, CA --- The Purdue Boilermakers got a sixth-run fifth inning, keyed by a pair of home runs, and the Bengals lost their fifth straight game, dropping an 8-0 game to Purdue in the final game of the Capital Classic.

The Bengals (4-22) got only a pair of singles from Nicole Antonoplos, who entered the game hitting just .174 for the season. The only other runner to reach against Brooke Baker was Kaylie Neal, who walked in the fifth.

Purdue got all the runs they would need in the first,s coring without a hit. With one out Ashley Barr reached when third baseman Heather Dixon's throw was off for an error. Barr then stole second, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Katie Mitchell.

The error was the start of a rough day for Dixon, who would commit four on the day, and going 0-for-2 at the plate as well. Jenna Alexander made it 2-0 in the second with a solo home run, and things seemed fine until the destructive fifth inning for Purdue.

In the inning Purdue scored six times on five hits. Kelly Miller led off the inning and reached on Dixon's second error of the game, after a base hit, Barr hit a shot to third that Dixon dove and got, but her attempt at first sailed wide for another error, allowing Miller to score and everyone else to move up 60 feet. Mitchell drove in everyone with a home run to make it 6-0, and after a strike out, Kelsey Haupert went deep as well to make it 7-0.

With runners on 1st and 2nd, Miller, who led off the inning reaching on a Dixon error, did it again as Dixon again threw wide of first for her third error of the inning and fourth of the game, making it 8-0 before the inning ended when Ashley Hall popped out.

Lindsay Boughton (3-13) took the loss for ISU, pitching her 11th complete game of the season, allowing five earned runs and eight hits, striking out five. The Bengals ended the tournament 0-5, and life doesn't get any easier, as they now travel to take on a pair of nationally ranked teams in Oregon and Oregon State in road doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.

NOTES: The Bengals have eight more road games before coming home for 14 straight ... Purdue went 5-0 in the tournament after entering the weekend at 6-18 overall ... ISU scored just four runs and had 16 hits in the five-game tournament.
