Provo, UT--Idaho State came up just short, dropping a 3-1 decision to Brigham Young Friday night at Gail Miller Field in the Cougars' home opener. BYU's Emi Snow broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning, connecting on a walk-off home run to lift the Cougars to the win.
Idaho State falls to 4-27 overall this season, while BYU ups its record to 17-14.
"We've come a long way," said ISU head coach Larry Stocking. "Our record doesn't indicate the talent that we have on this team. Our schedule has consisted of numerous top-25 opponents, including teams from all the power conferences. Because we don't have a conference, our entire season consists of this caliber of teams, like BYU. It would be like our football team playing Oklahoma, USC, and Florida all season long."
Lindsay Boughton went the distance for Idaho State, going 6.1 innings with just three earned runs. Boughton faced 24 batters, walking one and striking out two.
"Boughton was outstanding," Stocking said. "You have to remember that she's only a freshman. I think tonight is an early indication of just how good she's going to be."
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Whitney Nix hit a single, knocking in Christine Shollenberger in from second base. ISU's defense came through over the next three innings, forcing the Cougars to leave four runners on base.
Nix, playing against her sister who is a catcher for BYU, led the Bengals, going 2-3 at the plate.
Christie Zinanti picked up the win on the mound for BYU.
Idaho State will continue play against Brigham Young on Saturday. Opening pitch at Gail Miller Field is set for noon.
