Santa Clara, CA--Idaho State dropped both ends of a double-header to Santa Clara on Wednesday, falling 6-0 in game one and 3-1 in game two. The Bengals continue play in California, traveling to Moraga to participate in the St. Mary's Tournament March 9-11.
The losses drop Idaho State to 2-13 overall, while Santa Clara improves to 4-19.
Santa Clara's Jerrica Castagno went the distance, hurling seven innings while only giving up two hits. Idaho State's Christine Keetin and Shanna Schmitz were the lone Bengals to record hits off of Castagno. Schmitz connected on a single in the third inning, while Keeton hit a single in the top of the seventh.
Lindsay Boughton pitched five innings for ISU, collecting six strikeouts. Andrea Coburn also recorded an inning of work without giving up a hit.
After falling behind 1-0 after one inning of play in the second game, Idaho State tied the game up in the top of the third when Whitney Nix stole home to score ISU's lone run of the game. Santa Clara then scored runs in the bottom of the third and fifth innings to secure the win.
Stephanie James, Christine Shollenberger, Merissa Jannsen, and Nix each recorded a hit for Idaho State.
After hurling five innings in game one, Boughton was back to work in the second game. The freshman pitcher pitched all six innings, giving up just two earned runs with a pair of strikeouts.
Jackie Morales picked up the win for Santa Clara, pitching all seven innings.
Idaho State will continue play in California, traveling to Moraga to participate in the St. Mary's Invitational March 9-11 at Cottrell Field. ISU will open Invitational play against Utah Valley on March 9 at 1 p.m.
