Chubbuck, ID--Idaho State split a doubleheader against Utah Valley State Saturday at Capell Park, defeating the Wolverines 3-2 in game one before falling 4-2 in game two. The win over Utah Valley marks the first win over a Division I opponent this season for the Bengals.
With the split, Idaho State improves to 7-29 overall, while Utah Valley now sits at 16-24 on the season.
"We've come a long way this season," said ISU head coach Larry Stocking. "Our goal was to improve throughout the season and build for the future and I think that's exactly what we've done. There has been a tremendous improvement in our team, and I think that is evident by the win today."
Leading 1-0 in the top of the first inning of game one, Christine Keeton connected on her third homerun of the season, knocking in Heather Dixon who had doubled in her at bat. The 3-0 lead proved to be enough as ISU picked up the 3-2 win.
Lindsay Boughton picked up the win in the circle for the Bengals, pitching seven innings without an earned run allowed. The freshman ace also struck out seven to pick up her fifth win of the season.
In game two, Idaho State's Dixon hit a double to right-center, scoring Amy Webb to cut the early Utah Valley lead to a 2-1 advantage after one full inning. The Wolverines then padded their lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the 4-1 lead.
ISU then rallied with as Dixon connected on a solo shot over the center field fence to cut the Utah Valley lead to a 4-2 advantage. However, with the go ahead run at the plate, Idaho State stranded two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Both teams went scoreless in the seventh as Utah Valley snuck away with the 4-2 win.
Andrea Coburn pitched all seven innings for ISU, giving up just two earned runs with three strikeouts.
Idaho State will now wrap up home play with a four-game set against Montana State-Billings on April 20 and 21. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m., while Saturday's twin bill will begin at noon.
