April 24, 2007

Game One Box Game Two Box

Pocatello, ID --- Idaho State could only muster a two-run home run from Heather Dixon, as the Utah State Aggies used a little longball power of their own to take a doubleheader from Idaho State 5-0 in game one and 10-2 in the nightcap.

The losses drop the Bengals to 9-31 in their first year, and they have just one doubleheader left, that at Utah Valley State on May 5.

Idaho State got only four hits in the opener, including a pair of hits from pitcher Lindsay Boughton, who now has seven hits in her last four games after having just two through the seasons' first 36 games.

Utah State (17-27) got all the offense they would need in game one in the second inning. Tara Evans and Jami Uragami both singled, and then both moved up on a double steal to second and third. Boughton (7-17) coaxed Amanda Grow into a ground out that scored a run, but she escaped further damage with a pop out and a strike out.

USU made it 2-0 when Aubrie Stroham doubled and scored on an Emily Reilly single. Amy Schoable made it 3-0 in the fifth with her 10th home run, tying the Utah State single game record. The Aggies added two more in the sixth.

Idaho State left seven runners on in game one, and five of those were in scoring position. Along with Boughton's two hits, Christine Keeton and Merissa Jannsen had singles.

In game two, Utah State went right to work on Andrea Coburn, as Schiable singled, and that was followed up by a home run from Ashley Bellum. After an out, Strohman doubled and Tara Evans followed with another home run to make it 4-0 in the first. Coburn eventually settled to retired eight straight, but she was touched for two more runs in the fourth when Simone Hubbard doubled in a run and then Emily Reilly scored on the back end of a double steal.

The Bengals finally got on the board when Heather Dixon followed Amy Webb's bunt single with a long two-run jack to left field, her team leading 11th, a figure that is tops among the nation's independent teams.

Utah State closed it in the fifth, scoring four runs on five singles, all of the runs coming with two outs.

For Idaho State, Dixon was 3-for-3 in game two, and Boughton had three hits over the course of the doubleheader. Keeton and Webb also had two hits for the day, and the Bengals played error free on defense.

NOTES: Dixon's team-best six game hitting streak came to an end in game one ... Boughton's personal four-game winning streak also came to an end .... The Bengals dropped to 0-13 on the road ... Boughton recorded a rarity for a pitcher, recording a putout on a foul ball ... Christine Keeton, the teams' DP, played first base in game two.
