Bakersfield, CA--Despite a season-high 17 kills from Jessica Gurney and a double-double effort from Christine Van Orden, Idaho State droped a 3-1 (23-30, 23-30, 30-22, 22-30) decision to UC Davis Saturday evening at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, Calif.
With the loss, Idaho State drops to 2-5 on the season. UC Davis picks up its first win of the season, improving to 1-4 overall.
After dropping the first two games of the match, Idaho State battled back in game three to take a 30-22 win. The momentum carried over to the first half of game four as ISU took a 13-12 lead, but it didn't last as UC Davis got the 30-22 win to secure the match.
"Our team had a great comeback in game three," said ISU head coach Mike Welch. "That comeback continued into the fourth game but we didn't close it out."
Gurney led the Bengals with a team-high 17 kills on 27 attacks with only three errors. Gurney connected on a .519 hitting mark on the night. Charlee Kinghorn also notched double digit kills with 12. Katie Edgson, Sarah Carson, and Van Orden each rounded out the offense at the net with seven kills each.
Van Orden recorded her third-straight double-double with 47 assists and 11 digs. Edgson led the team in digs with 16 and Emily Waldon added 15.
Idaho State will continue road play, traveling to the UC Riverside Tournament Sept. 7-8. The team will face Army, UC Riverside, and Robert Morris at the event. ISU's next home match will be Sept. 21 against Weber State.
