Pocatello, ID--Idaho State scored three goals in just over a three-minute span in the second period to secure a 5-2 victory over in-state rival Boise State in Governor's Cup play Friday afternoon at Davis Field. With the win, Idaho State improves to 1-1-1 on the season while Boise State falls to 1-2-0.
"It's a good win for us," said ISU head coach Allison Gibson. "It's always nice to beat a rival school and I'm proud of the way we hung in there to get the win."
With the win over BSU, Idaho State can now clinch a second-straight Governor's Cup title with a win over Idaho on Sunday at Davis Field. Opening kick is set for 2 p.m.
The Bengals got off to a quick start as sophomore forward Jana Boehler broke loose and put a goal in the back of the net in the fifth minute of the contest, giving ISU the early 1-0 lead. Annamarie Hofstetter assisted the goal.
Just six minutes after Boehler put the ball in goal, Chelsea Cox put a ball past the goal line for the score, helping the Bengals to a 2-0 lead in the 11th minute. Michelle Okumura and Hofstetter each picked up an assist on the score.
Boise State answered with a score of its own with just over a minute remaining in the first period. Danielle Schwalbe was credited with the goal which as assisted by Cheyenne Jones and Randi Baker. The goal helped the Broncos pull within one goal at the half. The momentum of BSU's score late in the first half carried over to the second period as Bronco midfielder Erin Wofford put in a score to tie the game at 2-2 in the 58th minute.
"It was like we fell asleep for about 20 minutes," Gibson said of the two-goal lapse. "The team bounced back in a big way and started playing like the did the first 20 minutes of the game. They stuck to the game plan and got their energy back."
The goal served as a wake-up call to Idaho State as the team was able to put in three goals in just over a three-minute span to secure the 5-2 win. Okumura started the scoring spree, scoring a goal at the 76:05 mark after she found herself open on the right side of the box, scoring the goal after receiving a cross from Natalie Graham. Graham and Kilee Quigley were credited with the assist on the go-ahead goal.
Jenny Ford was able to find the back of the net just over a minute later, scoring at the 77:31 mark after receiving a pass from Lauren Hough. Then, at the 79:33 mark, Hough found herself on the receiving end, receiving a ball from Jill Christofferson for the score, securing the Bengal victory.
"Was a surprised by the three-goal effort, yes I was," Gibson said. "I know they are capable of that kind of attack but three goals in nearly three minutes is pretty impressive at any level."
Maren Eves was impressive in goal for ISU, collecting two saves with the two allowed goals. Michaela Morrison played all 90 minutes in goal for Boise State, saving three balls with the five allowed goals.
Idaho State registered eight shots on goal in the game compared to Boise State's four. The Broncos did notch 14 overall shots on the day while ISU managed 12. Graham and Boehler led the Bengal attack with three shots each.
The Bengals look to secure a second-straight Governor's Cup title on Sunday when the team hosts Idaho. Opening kick is set for 2 p.m. Idaho defeated Southern Utah 2-0 Friday in the earlier game at Davis Field.
