Riverside, CA--Idaho State split a pair of five-game matches Saturday at the UC Riverside Tournament at the PE Gymnasium in Riverside, California. The Bengals knocked off tournament host UC Riverside 3-2 (26-30, 23-30, 30-26, 30-18, 15-12) before falling 3-2 (30-24, 29-31, 30-22, 21-30, 11-15) to Robert Morris.

With the split, Idaho State improves to 3-7 on the season. UC Riverside fell to 2-4 and Robert Morris upped its record to 5-4.

In the win over UC Riverside, freshman Charlee Kinghorn led the Bengal effort with a match-high 18 kills. Jessica Gurney and Emily Waldron also notched double digit kills with 10 and 12, respectively. Christine Van Orden set up the ISU offense with 43 assists, while connecting on six kills and 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the year.

Katie Edgson led the defensive effort with a match-high 23 digs, while Ashlyn McDowell fronted the team with four blocks.

Idaho State registered a season-high 14 service aces in the match. Waldron had a career-high seven aces and Edgson added four.

"The team had a courageous comeback after dropping the first two games," said ISU head coach Mike Welch. "We were aggressive with our serving and attacking to charge back and win the final three games. It was great to see the fighting character of our team."

Waldron led Idaho State with a team-high 15 kills in the loss to Robert Morris. Kinghorn had 11 kills and Sarah Carson added 10. Gurney was just one kill shy of double digits with nine. Van Orden again led ISU with 44 assists and Edgson led the team with 16 digs.

Idaho State blocked the ball well, collecting 9.5 team blocks compared to Robert Morris' seven.

"After only a half hour break, we had to face a fresh Robert Morris team," Welch said of the second match of the day. "We stormed out and won commandingly in game one. Our fatigue showed as we played inconsistently after that. We just didn't have the same energy later in our second match."

Waldron was named to the UC Riverside All-Tournament team for her efforts in the three matches.

Idaho State wraps up its preseason slate with a 3-7 record and now prepares for Big Sky Conference play next week. The team will travel to Portland State for the conference opener on Sept. 13. ISU's next home match will take place on Sept. 21 when the team hosts Weber State.
