Missoula, MT--Idaho State posted its first Big Sky Conference loss in a 2-0 physical contest against Montana Sunday afternoon at the South Campus Stadium. Both Grizzly goals were scored in the first period when the Bengals lost possession of the ball in the air. Montana improves to 1-1-0 in the conference while Idaho State falls to 0-1-1.
The Bengals dominated in the first five minutes, but was overcome physically as Montana rose to the challenge quickly and netted a goal at 7:35 seconds. Megan Chambers created the goal scoring opportunity as she took a shot that redshirt senior keeper Maren Eves-Williams saved by blocking the ball with her body. The rebound set up Brandee Marone who scored her third goal of the season.
After the Grizzlies first goal they posted all four of their corner kicks, which proved to be the catalyst for their second scoring opportunity. As Sara Aspinwall won possession and headed the ball for a goal at 28:27 for her first goal of the season. Aspinwall nearly posted a goal previously as she hit the post on a shot less than two minutes earlier.
Montana out-shot the Bengals 17 to four and recorded 11 shots in the first period alone. The Bengals recharged at the break and held Montana to only six shots in the second period. Idaho State posted only two shots in each period. The first and only on goal shot for the Bengals came from defender Lauren Hough in the first thirty seconds of play. Redshirt junior Jana Davis-Boehler posted two shots over the course of the game.
Montana played a physical game that Idaho State responded to in the second period. "It's the second physical team we've seen in a row and it was a very physical game," said head coach Allison Gibson. "We had to challenge the team to raise the physicality."
To jumpstart the physical play in the second period, freshman keeper Bailey Williams saw the field from a different perspective than she has all season as she was sent to the front lines. Williams who plays a raw, physical game as a keeper continued her aggressive style on the field. Though the keeper only played seven minutes she was a dominating force in changing the Bengal attitude and physicality that kept Montana out of the second period.
Though there were two keepers on the field at once, Maren Eves-Williams held the keeper position for ISU and recorded nine saves including a penalty kick from Sara Campbell in the 22nd minute of the first period.
Idaho State will continue on the road as they play Northern Colorado on Friday, October17 at Jackson Stadium and Northern Arizona on Sunday, October 19 at Lumberjack Stadium.
Note: Three yellow cards were given during the match, two of which went to the Bengals. Freshman Bailey Williams posted the first followed by Katie Miller and UM's Brande Marone in the 71st minute.
