Missoula, MT--Idaho State started off strong against Montana but was unable to finish out the sets as the Bengals fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-23) at the West Auxiliary Gym Friday night. Montana improves to 4-3 in the Big Sky while Idaho State falls to 1-6 in conference play. Overall, the Bengals had a competitive match up as they recorded 16 tied scores and nine lead changes.
Errors brought down the Bengals attack percentage to .106 as they posted 34 kills with 22 errors from 113 attempts. Freshman Jaclyn Hone never let up as she pounded the attack with 11 kills and six errors from 34 attempts for a .147 percentage. She also recorded a service ace during the match. Hone was two digs shy of a double-double as she recorded eight digs. Sophomore Britta Barschi also played aggressively with her nine kills and five errors for a .211 percentage at the net. Redshirt Junior Paige Palmer was one dig shy of posting her sixth 20+ dig match. She deflected numerous attacks to keep long rallies in play. Junior Emily Waldron recorded ten digs for the Bengals along with seven kills for a .182 attack percentage.
Idaho State started off strong with forceful attacks playing a tight game holding the lead by a point at a time until late in the set at the 18-16 mark. The Bengals fought hard with strong hits as they posted 11 kills with only five errors from 35 attacks for a .171 percentage. However, Montana was able to string together points in the knick of time to take the set 25-23 in the first. Hone was a dominate force throughout the set as she pounded four kills without a single error from 12 attempts for a .333 percentage. Hone mixed up her shot selection pounding the cross-court and line kill with dominance. Senior Brenda Cooper posted three kills and two block assists to start the match. ISU recorded nine tied scores and five lead changes.
In the second set, the Bengals started with a fire as they took a solid 7-3 lead until Montana found momentum and did not relent as they were able to pull away for a 25-19 set victory. Sophomore Britta Bartschi recorded four kills with one error for a .273 attack percentage in the second set, hitting a combined attack percentage of .364 by the second. Junior Emily Waldron posted four kills with two errors from 13 attempts for a .154 attack percentage by the second. Waldron posted three digs and a block assist in the second.
The Bengals started off behind on the scoreboard in the third, but dug deep to keep a competitive set with Grizzlies. Hone continued to blast attacks at Montana in the third set. She recorded five kills with four error from 14 attempts for a .071 attack percentage. Waldron pounded the ball to the floor with force as she posted three kills with only one error from nine attempts for a .222 attack percentage. However, Montana confident from their two set lead pulled out the victory to seal the match.
Cooper and McDowell each posted three block assists while Waldron and Carson each posted two to give the Bengals six team blocks to Montana's eight. Montana maintained a .200 percentage with 41 kills and 18 errors from 115 attacks. They also recorded five serivce aces.
The Bengals will return to action against Montana State on Saturday, October 18 at the Shroyer Gym and will begin at 7 p.m.
