Pocatello, ID--The Bengals ended their 14 game non-winning streak when they dominated defending Big Sky Champion Sacramento State with a 3-1 victory on Thursday afternoon at Davis Field. Idaho State was deadly accurate as they posted eight shots all of which were on goal and took advantage of their three back line to post three goals, the most goals in a game this season. The Bengals, who post a 3-10-4 overall record, improve its Big Sky record to 1-3-1 posting four points in season play. Sacramento State fell to 2-3-0 to maintain its six points in conference and post a 8-8-1 overall record.
"Today they played such good soccer. They had it on their minds. They had a great week, they had the pregame, the halftime. Everything was all about this team and they took full control of it," said head coach Allison Gibson. "They decided that this is it. We are going to come back and protect our home field and that's what we started playing for. Just an awesome job by these kids."
The Bengals certainly started off strong dominating the offense; however, not much action occurred until late in the first period when senior midfielder Kilee Quilgey was knocked to the ground and fouled just inside the Hornets box. Jana Davis-Boehler took the penalty kick for the Bengals. As Sacramento State Keeper Savannah Abercrombie went to make a save in the bottom left corner, Davis-Boehler made a blasting shot to the upper right corner in the 29th minute. The goal was redshirt junior Davis-Boehler's first for the year and her seventh in her four-year career, improving her all-time leader status as tied for fourth at Idaho State.
"It was exciting," said forward Davis-Boehler. "I think it helped us have confidence when we got a goal. We've struggled with being up to start and it gave us something to go for and hold on to."
Idaho State's goal from Davis-Boehler's penalty kick was the only one of the first period, where Idaho State led the shot count three to two. Feeding off the momentum the Bengals scored two goals in the second period. Noelle Sanders scored the game-winning goal at 51:52 on a long shot off a quick touch pass play from Lauren Ryan and Kacey Ball. Sanders drilled the left upper corner of the goal from 30 yards out. The goal was the first of her career as a Bengal.
Hungry for more Sanders saw another scoring opportunity as she flicked on a ball to sophomore Lauren Ryan who hit an open Quigley. Hornets' keeper Abercrombie could do nothing to stop the third goal of the game. Quigley's goal was her second for the season. Sanders earned a career-high three points during the game and forward Ryan was credited with two assists during the game for two points. Her two assists during a half has only been matched ten times in school history.
While Sacramento State made a great push towards the end of the second period, recording nine shots to Idaho State's five, but was only able to net one goal when Katelin Hopping and Kim Kemper set up Ashley Forbes who made a clean shot to the upper right corner of the goal, for her fourth of the season. The shot was just out of reach of the 5' 5" freshman keeper Bailey Williams at the 71:48 mark, however Williams size is nothing to scoff at as she jumped up and blocked a high ball just under the cross bar to push it out of harms way in the second period.
The hornets nearly scored again when Tiffany Fraser lobbed a free kick into the box where Cori Shreve got a foot on the ball. The ball rolled just to the inside of the post, where it tapped the post. ISU keeper Williams got a hand on the ball as it pressed against the post and was able to scoop it away to keep the Hornets to only one goal. Williams posted five saves during the game and recorded her second victory as a keeper.
The Bengals return to Davis field Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Portland State for their final home match of the season. Senior Day will be celebrated as it will be the final home match of seniors Kilee Quigley and Katie Miller, as well as redshirt senior Maren Eves-Williams and redshirt junior Jana Davis-Boehler.
