Eastern Washington Overcomes Bengals in 3-1 Victory

Cheney, WA--Idaho State started strong as they took the first set against Eastern Washington but was overcome in the remaining sets to fall 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 21-25, 21-25) at Reese Court Thursday night. Eastern Washington improves to 11-9 for the season with a 6-3 Big Sky record which included a loss to Idaho State in September. The Bengals fall to 5-16 for the season and post a 2-7 Big Sky record.

Sophomore Britta Bartschi and senior Brenda Cooper posted double-digit points for the Bengals with 14 and 14.5 respectively. Britta Bartschi was the only Bengal to record double-digit kills with 13. Bartschi posted a .345 attack percentage as she had 29 attacks and only three errors. She posted three digs and two block assists. Outside hitter Cooper eight kills with only three errors from 21 attempts for a .238 attack percentage. She led the front line defense filled with two solo blocks and five block assists. Cooper also recorded two service aces as did junior Emily Waldron.

The Bengals out-blocked the Eagles as they posted twelve team blocks to Eastern Washington's nine. Junior Ashlyn McDowell was influential in the block with Cooper as she posted seven block assists. McDowell also recorded three kills with zero errors from 14 attempts for a .214 percentage.

Idaho State was out-hit as the Eagles posted 63 kills with 28 errors from 165 attacks for a .212 attack percentage while keeping the Bengals to just 40 kills with a .142 percentage from 148 attacks. The Bengals captured the first set even though they only had a .059 attack percentage making seven kills with five errors from 34 attempts. Though the Eagles went from a .195 attack percentage in the second set to a .359 attack percentage in the fourth the Bengals still played competitively recording 21 points in the second, third and fourth sets.

The Bengals took the first set quickly and recorded seven tied scores and only two lead changes. Eastern Washington would not allow a repeat of the early defeat to the Bengals and a battle ensued which included 15 tied scores and seven lead changes in the second set alone. Overall they recorded 34 tied scores and 14 lead changes between the teams.

Idaho State continues play against Portland State on Saturday, October 25 at the Peter W. Stott Center at 8 p.m.
