Solid Defense Not Enough as Bengals Fall 3-0 to Portland State

Portland, OR--Idaho State fell to Portland State in straight sets (25-20, 26-24, 27-25). The Bengals posted a solid defensive match as they out blocked Portland State (14-6, bsc 7-3) recording 13 blocks and 51 digs to keep the Vikings on their toes Saturday night at the Peter W. Stott Center. PSU only recorded eight blocks and 54 digs. Both teams were forced into low attack percentages as Idaho State (5-17, bsc 2-8) and Portland State pushed the limits on its attack to force a kill.

Overall, the Bengals posted a .032 attack percentage. Junior Emily Waldron led the way with seven kills and only two errors from 24 attacks for a .208 percentage. She also recorded 14 digs and matched her season-high block assists with three. Waldron earned ISU 8.5 points, as did sophomore Sarah Carson who recorded four kills with two errors from 11 attacks for a .182 percentage. Carson led the front line defensive effort with two solo blocks and five blocks assists.

In the first set the Bengals posted eight kills but made eight errors from 29 attempts for a .000 hitting percentage, however, Portland State did little better as they posted thirteen kills with nine errors from 34 attempts for a .118 percentage. The Viking posted three service aces in the first set. Idaho State's front line defense kept them in the set as the Bengals posted four blocks to the Vikings singular team block. The set contained six tied scores and three lead changes.

Both teams struggled in the second set when they both posted negative attack percentages. Idaho State had a -.051 percentage while Portland State posted -.020 in the second. The Bengals surpassed Portland State in the defense as they had seven team blocks while the Vikings posted five. Portland State's solid service helped close out the set as they recorded two aces.

Idaho State took a two point lead in the third set at 7-5, but Portland State came. With accurate kills and excellent hustle on the defense, the Bengals regained the lead at 16-14. Idaho State defended two match points from the Vikings before Portland State closed out the set. ISU improved as they out hit the Vikings .105 to .085 in the third with 18 kills and 12 errors from 57 attacks. The spikes by ISU were noticeably different as the Bengals swung freely. Unfortunately, Portland State had its best defensive set during the same match out blocking the Bengals eight to two. The third set was extremely competitive as there were 13 tied scores and five lead changes.

Portland State posted two double-doubles as it relied heavily on Marija Vojnovic who recorded 13 kills and 11 digs as well as setter Nique Fradella who posted 34 assists and 11 digs. Outside hitter Jennifer Oney was a positive force for the Vikings as she recorded 13 kills with only four errors from 24 attacks for a .375 percentage.

Idaho State returns to action at home in Reed Gym against rival Weber State on Thursday, October 30 at 7 p.m.
