Pocatello, ID--Idaho State defeated Seattle in the first five set match of the season Friday night at Reed Gym. The Halloween match started off well as the Bengals captured the first two sets, but nearly ended frighteningly as the Bengals had nail biting fourth and fifths sets. Idaho State took the match 25-20, 27-25, 22-25, 26-28, 15-13 to improve their record to 7-17 while the Redhawks fell to 9-19 for the season.

"I think it's a good thing we had a five set match and I think it's a good thing that we won, because now they've gone through five," said head coach Chad Teichert. "It was great that they stayed in there and worked and did the things they needed to pull it out."

Junior Emily Waldron and freshman Jaclyn Hone each posted double-doubles from kills and digs. Waldron recorded 21 kills from 52 attempts with only seven errors for a .269 percentage and posted 19 digs. Hone also had 19 digs but recorded 10 kills with four errors from 33 attempts for .182 attack percentage. Waldron earned 23.5 points for the Bengals as she recorded two serves aces and a block assist. Senior Blakely Peppinger and Karissa Legaux recorded 26 and 21 assists respectively.

The Bengals posted 35 tied scores and 20 lead changes over the course of the match with 11 tied scores in both the fourth and fifth sets. Seattle threatened the Bengals with their solid defense recording 13 team blocks, three of which came from solo blocks, while ISU recorded eight. The Redhawks also out hit the Bengals, however slightly, as they posted .189 percentage to ISU's .144 percentage. Though certain aspects of the game leaned in favor of the Redhawks, it was the Bengals perseverance and excellent service game that pulled them through the match as they recorded nine service aces to Seattle's two.

Senior Brenda Cooper served an ace to capture the match; just one of nine service aces the Bengals recorded against Seattle.

The Bengals started off strong as they posted a .222 attack percentage in the first set from 13 kills from 36 attempts with five errors. The team took the lead early and let Seattle in briefly before closing out the set. The second set occurred much in the same fashion with tighter scores due to errors and short points giving the Bengals a difficult time recapturing the momentum. They finished out the second set on top, but did not set themselves up well into the third.

The third and fourth sets are where the Bengals posted the majority of their errors, and when combined by the solid defensive efforts of Seattle resulted in dropped sets. The Redhawks also used numerous back row attack to catch the Bengal block off guard. Idaho State had set point in the third until a long spike which unfortunately was touched by the back line in an effort to save what was thought to be an in ball. Cristin Richards of Seattle was a big threat to the Bengals as she was nearly unstoppable in the third and fourth set. She pounded 13 kills with four errors from 33 attempts to post a .273 attack percentage.

The Bengals were able to close out the fifth set, their first of the year. The final point issued a sigh of relief among the crowd, who had been on edge since the beginning of the third set, as senior Brenda Cooper served an ace to clinch the victory.

The Bengals hold a two-match win streak and look to take a third as they host Montana Western on Thursday, November 6 at 7 p.m.
