Pocatello, ID--Though the Bengals played well in a tight match against the Lumberjacks, Northern Arizona prevailed to overcome ISU 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-12) for the Bengals first five set loss of the season. Northern Arizona improves to 6-9 in conference on their senior night while ISU fell to 4-10 in at their last road game of the season, to end its chance to attend the Big Sky Conference Tournament.
Junior Emily Waldron and freshman Jaclyn Hone each posted double-doubles in kills and digs. Waldron recorded an equal number of kills and digs at 16 as well as recording two service aces for 18 points. Hone recorded 11 kills and 17 digs for her third consecutive double-double. Freshman Karissa Legaux set for the Bengals to post a career high 52 assists. Redshirt Junior Paige Palmer recorded her ninth 20-dig match with 26 against Northern Arizona. Sophomores Sarah Carson and Britta Bartschi also contributed with 13 and 12 kills respectively and each posting five block assists.
Idaho State fell in the first set 25-18 as Northern Arizona was unstoppable on the attack posting 15 kills with only three errors from 35 attempts for a .343 percentage while the Bengals posted just a .139 percentage. The team recollected itself and set up a solid defense reducing the Lumberjack charge to win the next two sets. ISU made the Lumberjacks work for their kills thus forcing the team into a .012 attack percentage with 21 kills and 20 errors in the second and third sets while ISU posted a .153 percentage with 28 kills and 15 errors over the sets.
Bound and determined Northern Arizona pushed through the trouble ISU was causing the Lumberjacks to reduce their errors. NAU stepped up and took fourth set 20-25, and posted a .268 attack percentage from 15 kills and only four errors. The Lumberjacks used their momentum to make the final push in the fifth set.
NAU out-blocked Idaho State 13 to 10 and hit an overall attack percentage of .181 to ISU's .153 percentage. Defensively, NAU was solid posting 13 blocks and 90 digs. NAU senior Alex Fell enjoyed her last game at home earning 19.5 points for the Lumberjacks. Fell posted 15 kills and 20 digs as well as seven block assists. However, the two people to force a big dent in ISU's plans was Lexi Sullivan offensively as she recorded 25 kills and senior Brittany Stowers defensively as she posted 37 digs which propelled her to set the single season record for digs at Northern Arizona.
Idaho State will return home to finish out their season against Montana State at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 21 and Montana at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 22 at Reed Gym.
