Idaho State Defeats Montana State in Five Sets

Pocatello, ID--Idaho State volleyball continues on a six-game home winning streak with its 3-2 victory over Montana State by out hitting the Bobcats at Reed Gym Friday night. The Bengals improve to a 10-19 overall record and are 5-10 in conference play. The Bobcats put up a solid fight but were unable to close out the match and fall to 0-15 in conference for a 3-22 overall record.

The Bengals out hit the Bobcats .167 to .099 on the attack with Idaho State recording 54 kills to Montana State's 47 kills. Freshman Jaclyn Hone posted her fourth consecutive double-double with 13 kills and 17 digs. Junior Emily Waldron posts her second consecutive double-double with 10 kills and digs a piece. Waldron had 10 kills and 0 errors from her 33 attacks for a .303 percentage. Defensively, redshirt junior Paige Palmer recorded 22 digs getting her 12 digs away from holding the all-time single season digs record in ISU history. Sophomore Sarah Carson posted the team-high 12 kills. Carson only had two errors from 24 attacks for an impressive .417 percentage.

ISU started off the match strong, easily taking the first set 25-15 filled with 11 kills and only five errors from 33 attacks for a .182 percentage while forcing Montana State to post 10 errors and only seven kills for a -.068 percentage from 34 attacks.

The Bengals became passive and let Montana State into the match. "I think somehow we backed off and then it was hard for us to get back into it," said head coach Chad Teichert.

The Bengals started off slow but caught up to an 8-8 tie as Paige Palmer held possession in service with a run of four. ISU went on a Palmer posted 14 digs in the second set alone. The game ensued with 13 tied scores and five lead changes that ended with a slide kill from Montana State's Kyla Hendry.

Montana State took advantage of the momentum and easily overcame the Bengals 25-17 in the third where ISU only posted four kills. MSU was led by Nicole Grypiuk who posted 12 kills for the night recording 43 attacks and 10 errors for a .047 percentage. Hendry's slide right side attack frustrated the Bengals enough to earn her 10 kills.

With the match on the line Idaho State regrouped and overcame Montana State in a close 25-22 set that contained nine tied scores and six lead changes. Both teams fought MSU to attempt to capture their first victory and ISU to hold winning streak at home. However, Idaho State came out on top as they hit .243 knocking down 17 kills with only eight errors from 37 attacks and keeping MSU to a .125 attack percentage.

"When you think you've gotten better you don't give up as easy," said head coach Chad Teichert about the ISU comeback. "When you think you are pretty good you maybe start playing like you are pretty good. Tonight we were good enough to win."

ISU finished strong with a 15-9 fifth set to end the match in the Bengals favor as they posted a .400 attack and kept Montana State to .000 as they had just three kills and three errors. Montana State put up a solid defensive effort recording 12 team blocks to overcome ISU's nine.

Idaho State will compete in its last match of the season hosting Montana at Reed Gym Saturday, November 22 at 7 p.m.
