Logan, UT--Senior Michelle Grohs' 21 point night and an overall solid offensive night for ISU led to the 58-43 defeat of Utah State at the Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum Saturday night. ISU was 20-of-55 for 36.4 percent from the field and returned to a high free throw percentage of 80 percent to overcome the Aggies. Idaho State improves to a 2-2 record while the Aggies fall to 1-2 for the season.
Grohs had an excellent night posting a career and game-high of 21 points. She was 8-for-16 from the field sinking 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Grohs also hit her only free throw attempt and was the only person to pull down a double-digit rebound of 10, a split effort between the offense and defense.
Idaho State started off strong when junior Oana Iacovita put down the first two points for the Bengals at the free throw line, these two charity line shots were the only ones in the first half. The Bengals have struggled at the free throw line so far this season, but returned to their high free throw percentage at 80 percent by the end of the game putting away 12-of-15 shots.
ISU sailed from that point to take a 12-5 lead off a layup by junior Devin Diehl. The layup had an interesting effect as both teams were at a standstill on the scoreboard for 4:01 after Diehl's layup until USU's Danyelle Snelgro hit a jumper at the 12:04 mark to end the standstill.
The Bengals finished the first half ahead 23-16 as they capitalized on Aggie mistakes forcing ten points from turnovers in the first half. ISU went on to record a total of 21 points from turnovers.
Out of the gates starter Chelsea Pickering hit a jumper thirteen seconds into the second half, but Utah State responded with a 14-to-4 run to hold their biggest lead of the game with a 32-29, three-point lead. ISU returned the favor with a 21-5 run to hold their biggest lead of the game at 16 to put ISU up 53-37.
ISU forced 20 turnovers by the Aggies and recorded 13 steals. Utah State out rebounded the Bengals 44-to-37, but both teams posted 26 defensive rebounds.
Idaho State continues on the road as they play Southern Utah at the Centrum Arena on Tuesday night at 5 p.m. before heading off to the Loyola Marymount Ayres Hotel Thanksgiving Tournament to end their seven road game run to start the season.
