Pocatello, ID--Idaho State recorded one of its most offensively strong matches out-hitting Montana Western with 44 kills to 18 to post a 3-0 victory over the Bulldogs at Reed Gym Thursday night. The Bengals improve their winning streak to three and post a 5-3 home record as they improve to 7-17 over the season while Montana Western fell to 2-20 overall. Idaho State dominated play to record a 25-15, 25-12, 25-16 match.
With the loss of starter and major contributor Brenda Cooper, who fell during warm-ups, the Bengals switched game plans going from a two-setter formation to a single-setter formation. The change took the first part of the match for the Bengals to pin down the 5-1 formation but ended up dominating with a .310 attack percentage recording 44 kills from 100 attempts and only 13 errors.
Idaho State started feeling out the new formation, thus posting seven ties and even trailed 12-10 due to service and attack errors. The Bengals quickly became comfortable with the new formation and never looked back as they overcame and dominated play the rest of the set recording 15 kills from 34 attacks with five errors for a .294 attack percentage.
Freshman Jaclyn Hone and juniors Ashlyn McDowell and Britta Bartschi posted double digit kills. Bartschi had the best attack percentage of the three with .412 from 10 kills and only 3 errors in 17 attacks. Hone posted 12 kills with only four errors from 23 attempts for a .348 attack percentage. Middle Blocker Sarah Carson recorded the pest attack percentage of the match at .500 with six kills and zero errors from 12 attempts.
Senior Blakely Peppinger started as the lone setter posting 23 assists as she played in all three games. Karissa Legaux rotated with Peppinger and recorded 12 assists over two games. Both setters recorded a block assist.
The Bengals tough offense was also seen in their excellent service game as they posted nine service aces improving the teams' total count for the season to 105. Junior Emily Waldron recorded four service aces, two in a row during the start of the third set. Bartschi recorded two aces over the match.
Idaho State out-blocked the Bulldogs five to four as ISU posted eight block assists and one solo block to Montana Western's six block assists and one solo block. McDowell led the frontline defense with three block assists and posting the solo block for ISU.
The Bengals will return to the court just ten hours after the start of their last match to host Sacramento State at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, November 7 at Reed Gym.
