Pocatello, ID--Freshman Sheila Adams scored the game-high 16 points to lead Idaho State in its first competition under a new system and new staff where the Bengals responded effectively dominating Concordia 71-43 in an exhibition game at Reed Gym Friday night.
Four Bengals posted double-digits in scoring with Adams at 16, Michelle Grohs at 15 and Iacovita and senior Jenna Brown at 10 each to contribute to the 28 point margin of defeat.
The Bengals started off strong holding a 21-8 lead that did not recede as they finished the first half hitting 11 of 30 and held Concordia to seven of 24. In the first half alone, Adams drained five field goals from eight attempts. Senior Grohs was effective on the offense as well as the defense as she shot 6 for 10 and was 3 for 5 in three-point field goals. She also pulled down nine rebounds, the game-high and recorded two blocked shots.
In the second half Concordia felt the same pressure from the Bengals mirroring the Eagles first half effort posting seven field goals while ISU improved to 13 from 24 attempts. The Bengals are still learning patience as they eagerly posted up shots.
"At times in the first half we really executed well. The second half I think we got a little tired or thought we could do something independent of the offense to score, but it's a progress and we are definitely getting better at it," said head coach Seton Sobolewski about the offensive strategy used by the Bengals in their first competition of the season. "The main focus was to get better and to grow. I think we did that tonight especially defensively."
Idaho State hit the boards hard, out-rebounding Concordia 43 to 37, posting 32 defensive rebounds. Junior Oana Iacovita posted the game-high seven defensive rebounds while Grohs posted five defensive and four offensive. Idaho State also ended scoring opportunities for Concordia as the Bengals recorded four blocked shots and 12 steals. Their aggressive play on the defense also led to 25 fouls, ten of which came from Devin Diehl and Chelsea Pickering who both fouled out. Cara Lambert was close with four fouls.
Notes: Concordia recorded 13 offensive rebounds to Idaho State's 11 ... The Bengals recorded a 75 percentage in free throws in the first half but finished at 63.6 percent. Idaho State set the NCAA's all-time NCAA free-throw percentage record at .832 for the season. The game was the first for Seton Sobolewski as a head coach in his career.
