Pocatello, ID--The Bengals competed in for a total of seven hours and two minutes Saturday afternoon against Portland State and Air Force. Five hours and ten minutes of play was against Air Force alone. The long day took its toll on the Bengals as they were defeated 4-3 by Air Force. Air Force improved their season record to 4-2 while the Bengals season record fell to 1-2.
"Our guys were tired," said head men's and women's tennis coach Bobby Goeltz. "When you are tired you don't waste time, every game counts." Freshman, Danel Barrenechea took coach's words to heart and was the first singles match off the court when he defeated James Tomlin in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at the number three spot. Barrenechea won both of his matches Saturday to improve his singles record to 2-1.
Tired senior Marc Pijoan also earned his victory in straight sets, improving his undefeated record to 3-0. Pijoan defeated Brett Rodgers 7-5, 6-1 at the number one singles. He held service the entire first set and broke Rodgers to take the first set 7-5. "I was pretty tired," said Pijoan. "I did not want to lose after fighting for the first set." He took a 2-0 lead in the second set before Rodgers held service the only game he would see during the second set.
Sophomore, Jeremy Atkin continued his winning streak for the day when he defeated Johnny Buckingham in a super-ten point tie breaker. Atkins fought hard put lost the first set in a seven-point tie breaker. He competed well and took the second set 7-5. Atkins continued playing well into the super-ten point tie breaker. He was given two game point opportunities, one at 9-8 which he did not take advantage of and the second at 10-9 that sealed his victory 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 11-9 at the number five spot.
The Bengals next match will occur against the University of Utah on Wednesday, February 20th at 5:00pm in Salt Lake City, UT.
