Salt Lake City, UT--The Bengals were swept by Utah University 7-0 Wednesday night at their first away match. The Utes improve their season record to 4-4 while the Bengals fall to a record of 1-3. The Bengals overall percentage in singles dropped to .375 with a 9-15 record and a doubles percentage of .083 with a 1-11 record.
The Bengals dropped all three doubles contests. Senior Marc Pijoan and Freshman Danel Barrenechea were defeated by Zach Ganger and Wes Hancock 8-3. Sophomore's Javier Royo and David Kutchins teamed up for the first time, but it was not enough to overcome Othman Zerouali-Ouariti and Jason Smits who took the match 8-2. Freshman Alex Buceta and Jeremy Atkin a sophomore were also teamed up for the first time. Buceta and Atkin were defeated by Stephen Jacobs and Amit Maharaj 8-1.
Pijoan collected the most games in his match at the number one spot but was defeated in straight sets. Zach Ganger ended Pijoan's undefeated season of 3-0 defeating him 6-2, 6-4. Royo held a good start against Wes Hancock but was overcome 6-3, 6-1 at the number two spot. Barrenechea had a slow start but earned three games in the second set to be overtaken by Zerouali-Ouariti 6-0, 6-3 at the number three spot. Buceat and Atkin were able to pick up one game each in their respective matches. Kutchins was defeated 6-0, 6-0 by Maharaj at the number six spot.
The Bengals will continue a full weekend of play with their match against the University of Idaho on February 22nd in Colorado Springs at Air Force at 9 a.m.
