Bengals Fall to Idaho in Close Match

Colorado Springs, CO--The Bengals played a close match against the University of Idaho 4-3 on Friday morning at Air Force. The Vandals have had extensive court time so far in the season and improve their record to 9-5 while the Bengals fall to 1-4. Idaho State held victories in the one through three spots, but fell short in the bottom half of the line up.

The Bengals began the dual match winning one of three doubles contests, putting them behind 0-1 early in the match. Senior Marc Pijoan and freshman Danel Barrenechea defeated Stanislov Glukhov and Paulo Miranda 8-5 at the number one spot, improving their record to 2-3. Javier Royo, a sophomore, and freshman Alex Buceta took Andrew Dobbs and Hugh McDonald to a tie breaker but fell 9-8 (7-2) at the number three spot.

Pijoan easily gains a victory over Glukhov 6-4, 6-2 at the number one spot. He improves his season record to 4-1 with his straight set win. Royo lost a close first set 7-5 to Timothy Huynh which fired up Royo to take the next to sets 6-1, 6-2 to seal his victory at the number two spot.

Freshman Barrenechea also went to three sets with his opponent Robert Chalkley. He took the first set easily 6-1, but fell behind in the second set 1-6. Barrenechea took charge and captured the third set 6-2, improving to a winning singles record of 3-2.

Buceta fell behind early in the first set. He fought hard in the second set but had a difficult time recovering and was defeated by Dobbs 6-2, 7-5 at the number four position. Sophomre Jeremy Atkin fell to Hugh McDonald 6-4, 6-3 at the number five spot. David Kutchins, a sophomore, was defeated by Paulo Miranda 6-0, 6-0 at the number six spot.

The Bengals continue their heavy weekend of play Saturday against Wichita State at 2pm at Air Force.
