Pocatello, ID--The Idaho State women's tennis team competed in their first dual match of the season against rival Weber State. The Bengals had a tough fight falling to the Wildcats 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at Reed Gym. Weber State improves to 2-3 for their season record. The tennis team shows marked improvement since the 2007 season.

"We are a heck of a lot better at this point in the year compared to last year," said head men's and women's coach Bobby Goeltz, "we are better individually and collectively."

Lisel Lewis, a sophomore, holds her number one singles spot as she leads the Bengals with a victorious and exciting three set match. Lewis had the best season record for the Bengals in the 2007 season and continues on her excellence with her defeat over Weber State's Gabi Venditto 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4. Lewis took the first set easily. She was down 2-3 in the second set but held service. Unfortunately, late in the second set Venditto took an aggressive stance and broke Lewis to capture the second set. Lewis clinched the second set tie-breaker when she missed a drop shot near standing seven feet from the net. Down in the third set 3-4, Lewis turned up the heat and fired shots across the net that Venditto could not handle. The winning stroke from Lewis was a blasting approach shot to the corner of the deuce side that Venditto fumbled for a loss.

Another victory for the Bengals was gained from junior Lauren Pascoe who dominated Kelli Lindley with a score of 6-1, 6-2 at the number six spot. Stephanie Roldan, a junior, competed well against Weber State's Inalise Pienaar who played number one for the Wildcats in the 2007 season. Roldan was up 3-0 in the first set before falling to Pienaar. In the second set Roldan fought back to hold the score at 4-3 until Pienaar captured the next two games sealing her win over Roldan 6-3, 6-4 at the number two spot. Ali Rivera competed in her first match as a Bengal and her first competitive indoor match ever. Rivera played tough but was defeated by Greyce Farias 6-1, 6-2 at the number four spot.

The Bengals did not win the doubles point losing all three contests. Lewis and Sophie Dang teamed up to compete at the number one spot. Pienaar and Schapper defeated Lewis and Dang 8-4 in a tight match that the score did not reflect.

The Bengals will compete Wednesday February 6th, against Utah State at home in Reed Gym at 1:30pm.
