Pocatello, ID--The Bengal women were defeated by Utah State 6-1 Wednesday afternoon at Reed Gym. The Aggies improve their season record to 2-1 while the Bengals fall to 0-2. However, sophomore Lisel Lewis improves her undefeated season record with a straight set win.

Lewis is looking at an exciting season. "It is the best match I have seen her play" said head men's and women's coach Bobby Goeltz. "She got down three-love and basically won twelve games in a row, that's not easy to do at the number one position."

Lewis, the lone singles win for the Bengals, was down three-love in the first set before she won six games in a row to take the first set. Lewis only dropped the first game of the second set before winning another six games in a row to defeat Brianna Harris of Utah State 6-3, 6-1 at the number one spot.

Sophomore Sopie Dang had a slow start against Bridgette Swenson that started late in the first set but was not enough to hold off Swenson. Dang took the second game of the second set by holding serve and continued to battle with Swenson into a tie breaker. Dang was finally overcome by Swenson 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) at the number three spot.

Maddison Snevily, a sophomore, battled against Utah State's Taylor Perry to go into tie-breakers for each set and finishing with a super-ten-point tie-breaker to determine the match. Snevily was up in the first set 4-3 before losing two games in a row to switch momentum in the game. She started strong in the second set winning the first three games. Snevily slowly began to let Perry into the match with a few games. At 5-4 Snevily was up to close out the set but allowed Perry back into the match. Snevily captured the second set in a tie breaker and eventually fell to Perry in the super-ten-point tie breaker to a final score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (4-7), 10-7 at the number five spot.

Junior Lauren Pascoe took Jennifer Johnson to three sets. Pascoe took the second game of the first set before losing the first set 6-1. She then won three games in a row before Johnson won a game in the second set. Pascoe fought hard in the third set but was eventually defeated 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 at the number six spot.

The Bengals dropped the doubles point when they won one of the three contests. Ali Rivera and Snevily gained a victory at the number three spot over Perry and Johnson 8-6 putting their doubles season record to 1-1.

The women's team does not compete for nearly three weeks. "We have a lot of time to work on things until our next match" said Goeltz. The Bengals next match will occur on March 1st in Cheney against Eastern Washington.
