Bakersfield, CA--The Bengals continue on a two game winning streak with a back-to-back victory over Cal State Bakersfield in a 6-1 decision Tuesday at the Sally Ann Silva Courts. The Bengals improved their season record to 2-5 while the roadrunners fell to 0-8 for the season.
Juniors Stephanie Roldan and Lauren Pascoe teamed together at the number one spot and turned over their loss from the previous day into a solid win over Sara Mijwel and Ashlee Thorneycroft with an 8-1 decision at the number one spot. However, sophomores Lisel Lewis and Magaly Rivera were defeated by Kaydee Graham and Kati Lynott 8-2 at the number two spot. With a forfeit at the number three doubles spot the Bengals moved into singles with 1-0 start.
In singles, Lisel Lewis soundly defeated Ashlee Thorneycroft in straight sets with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the number one spot. Sophomore Sophie Dang won another three set match, this time against Cal State's Graham in her first match at number three singles this season. Graham dropped the first set to Dang 6-3 before earning a break in the 12th game of the second set to win 7-5 and force a super-ten-point tiebreaker for the third set. Dang fought hard to prevail 10-6 in the tie break.
Pascoe added to her number one doubles victory when she won her second match of the day at the number four singles spot in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 against Isabella Kasselstrand. Espinosa, who is returning from a neck injury, is back in full force as she improves her score against Mijwel only dropping two games during the match, five fewer games than Monday's match. Her victory improves her undefeated singles record to 2-0.
Rivera would have played at the number six singles spot but one by default. Roldan fell to Kati Lynott in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 at the number two singles spot.
The Bengals continue their Spring Break competition when they play a conference match at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27 at Sacramento State University.
