Sacramento, CA--The Idaho State men's tennis team was swept by Sacramento State 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club. The Hornets who have won eight straight matches improved their record to 13-7 for the season and are now 7-0 in Big Sky Conference play thus ensuring their entrance into the Conference Championships. The Bengals season record fell to 1-10 and 1-3 in Big Sky Conference play.

In doubles play the Bengals put forth a solid effort but dropped all three matches to fall behind 1-0 early in the match. Senior Marc Pijoan and Sophomore Javier Royo were defeated 8-4 at the number one spot against Anton Stryhas and Kiryl Harbatsiuk.

In singles the Bengals lost all six contests. The last Bengal off the court was Freshman Danel Barrenechea who played tough to take his opponent to a super ten-point tie-breaker for the third set. His opponent Artur Klimenka barely took the first set 7-5 at the number three spot. Barrenechea turned the tables and took the second set easily 6-3 but was unable to hold onto his winning streak when he fell in a hard fought 10-8 tie-breaker.

Sophomore Jeremy Atkin started his match well when he took three games from Holden Ching but failed to rally in the second set and fell 6-0 at the number five spot. Alex Buceta, a sophomore, also began his match with determination but was overcome by Sven-David Rueff 6-3, 6-0 at the number four spot. Pijoan had a difficult time against his opponent Anton Stryhas who improved his singles record to 19-1 when he defeated Pijoan 6-1, 6-1 at the number one spot.

The Bengals will have to find at least two additional team victories to make it into the Big Sky Conference Championships which they were not able to compete in last season. They have four more chances to gain two wins when they compete in their upcoming matches against Montana State, Montana, Northern Colorado and Weber State. Idaho State's next match is against Utah State on April 1st at 2:00 p.m. in Logan, Utah.
