Bengals Fall to Utah State 5-2

Logan, UT--The Idaho State men's tennis team was defeated by Utah State 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club. The Aggies improve their season record to 5-11 while the Bengals fall to 1-11 for the season. Idaho State has fallen to Utah State in the last four matches over the past two years.

In doubles the Bengals had competitive matches but dropped all three of the contests and captured two of the six singles matches. Senior Marc Pijoan captured a victory over Jakob Asplund in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 at the number one spot. He improved on his previous victory over Asplund in February when the Aggie took Pijoan to three sets. Pijoan improves his singles record to 8-4 for the season.

Freshman Danel Barrenechea competed against Fernando Gallegos for the second time this year in a three set match and finished victoriously. Barrenechea had a slow start against Gallegos in the first set falling 6-3, he then rallied back to take the second and third set 6-4 at the number three spot.

Jeremy Atkin, a sophomore, took the first set easily against Aggie's Matt Searle. He struggled and was overcome 7-5 in the second set. The Bengal competed in a super-ten point tie-breaker for the third set and fell 10-5 at the number five spot. Aggie's Oscar Ericsson won by default over sophomore Javier Royo 6-0, 2-1, wd at the number two spot. Freshman Alex Buceta fell to Jonas Tyden 6-0, 6-3 at the number fours spot. David Kutchins, a sophomore, took three games from opponent Matt Braithwaite at the number six spot.

The Bengals next match is a conference match against Montana State at 10 a.m. on April 5th at home in Reed Gym.
