Bengals Fall to Montana 6-1 at Home

Pocatello, ID--The Idaho State men's tennis team fell to Montana 6-1 Saturday morning at Reed Gym. Due to the loss the Bengals will have the chance to finish in seventh or eighth in conference depending on Sunday's upcoming match. Unfortunately for the Bengals, only the top six teams will be able to compete at the Big Sky Championships.

The Bengals won only one of the three doubles contests, putting them behind 1-0 early in the match. Sophomore's Javier Royo and Jeremy Atkin gained a victory, improving their record to 1-1, over opponents Felipe Raw and Raydner Ramos 8-5 at the number two doubles spot. Senior Marc Pijoan and freshman Danel Barrenechea fought hard in their close match but fell 8-6 to Colin Dektar and Mikolaj Borkowski at the number one spot.

In singles play, Pijoan improved his record to 9-5 when he easily defeated Dektar 6-4, 6-3 at the number one spot. Royo played a tough match against Borkowski at the number two singles spot. The match began with Borkowski narrowly taking the first set 7-5. Royo stayed mentally tough and worked to win the second set 6-4 putting the match into a third set. During the third set and throughout the tie breaker the score swayed back and forth until Borkowski hit a winning shot up the line to take the third set tiebreaker 7-5.

Freshman Barrenechea played tough but fell to Raw 6-4, 6-4 at the number three singles spot. Freshman Buceta was defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Ramos at the number four spot. Alexandre Gorj prevailed over Atkin when he defeated him 6-2, 6-1 at the number five spot. Sophomore David Kutchins fell to David Cysneiros 6-1, 6-0 at the number six spot.

Montana improves their record to 2-2 in Big Sky play, while the Bengals fall to a 1-5 Big Sky record. Idaho State returns to action Sunday, April 13th at Reed Gym against Northern Colorado at 10 a.m. The Bengals will be competing in their last conference and home match of the season.
