Bengals Fall to Northern Colorado 6-1

Pocatello, ID--The Idaho State women's tennis team was defeated by Northern Colorado 6-1 at Reed Gym Sunday afternoon. Northern Colorado improved their Big Sky record to 2-5 while the Bengals fell to 0-6. Senior Valerie Espinosa gained double victories at the number two doubles and number five singles spot.

Espinosa partnered with Sophomore Sophie Dang to defeat Jodi Ciarvella and Karen Groll 8-4 at the number two doubles spot, which improved their record to 3-2 for the season. In singles, Espinosa gained a victory over Luiza Xavier at the number five spot. The Bengal easily took the first set 6-0 until Xavier began to fight back. Espinosa fought hard and defeated Xavier 7-5 in the second set. Espinosa improves her singles record to 4-2 for the season.

The Bengals began the match down 1-0 when they let go of the doubles point by dropping two of the three doubles matches. Freshman Lisel Lewis and Junior Lauren Pascoe fell to Manuela Santos and Tabatha Knop 8-1 at the number one doubles spot. Juniors Stephanie Roldan and Madison Snevily were overcome by Hannah LaForest and Tiffany Knop 8-1 at the number three doubles spot.

Pascoe fought hard in her match against Karen Groll at the number four singles spot to take the first set 6-2. However, Groll fired up to overcome Pascoe 6-3 in the second set. Keeping with her performance in the second set Groll defeated the Bengal 10-1 in the third set tiebreaker. At the number one spot Lewis competed in a hard hitting match but fell 6-3, 6-0 to Tabatha Knop.

Dang had a competitive match against Santos but was overcome 6-3, 6-2 at the number three singles spot. At the number two singles spot Roldan was defeated 6-2, 6-0 by Tiffany Knop. The number six singles spot was defaulted.

Idaho State returns to action on April 15th against Utah State at 1 p.m. in Logan, Utah.
