Big Innings Doom Bengals in Provo

April 22, 2008

Box Score

Provo, UT --- Two big innings by Brigham Young proved to be the undoing of the Bengals as Brigham Young defeated Idaho State 8-0 in game one, and 11-0 in game two, both ending in five innings at BYU's Miller Field.

The Bengals battled well in game one, but down 1-0, a seven-run fourth inning was ISU's undoing. The first five hitters reached base in the seventh, the fifth on a two-out double by Daniela Snow to make it 5-0. After sacrifice and a walk, Andrea Coburn was lifted for Kandis Clesson, who promptly allowed a three-run home run to Jessica Purcell, her 10th of the season.

The Bengals had their chances in game one, with their best chance in the third, when down 1-0, Heather Dixon grounded out sharply to the pitcher Christie Zinante with runners on first and second. The game ended on a strange double play, when pinch hitter Christine Shollenberger fouled out to left, and Kaylie Neal advanced to third, only to be called out on appeal for leaving second to early.

Brigham Young ended the drama early in game two, putting up eight runs in an ugly first inning that saw six hits, three Bengal errors, and a three-run home run from Whitney Nix, who transferred to Brigham Young after playing for Idaho State last season. The Cougars (33-15) hit for the cycle in the first inning.

The Cougars added to their lead with a run in the second, and then two in the third on back-to-back solo home runs by Caschjen Davis and Amanda Vance.

About the only game two drama was if center fielder Megan Miller could continue her hitting streak to nine games, and if ISU would be no hit. Kaylie Neal got ISU in the hit column with a line shot to left in the third inning, as ISU managed only four hits over the course of the doubleheader. Miller, who lined a single to center in game one, struck out looking and then flied out to left to end ISU's season-best hitting streak at eight games. Amber Sackett had ISU's only others hit, a first inning single in game one, and a two-out fifth inning single in game two

NOTES: Idaho State now has not scored an earned run against a Division I opponent in 47 innings ... Idaho State has their final road game on Thursday at Utah State.
