Bengals Can't Hold Early Lead, Drop 5-3 to Utah State

April 24, 2008

Box Score

Logan, UT --- Idaho State bolted out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Aggies chipped away methodically and ended up with a 5-3 win over the Bengals in the only game of the day at Johnson Field. The second game of the day was cancelled due to the field conditions as the first game was played in very inclement weather.

The fact that the game was played at all was amazing, as both teams took literally dozens of rolls of paper towels and sopped up the standing water on the field.

The Bengals (7-25) jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Amber Sackett cranked her first career home run to center to lead off the game. That run ended a streak of 47 consecutive innings against Division I opponents without an earned run. The Bengals made it 3-0 with RBI singles from Brittany Olsin and Christine Shollenberger.

The Aggies got two runs back in the bottom half off of Andrea Coburn when Kayla Dunn hit a two-run homer. Aubrie Stroman then tied the game in the third with an RBI single, and the Aggies then took the lead for good on an unearned run in the fourth. With two outs, Shollenberger committed two straight errors, the second allowing the go-ahead run to score.

The Aggies added an insurance run in the sixth. The Bengals had their chances, leaving nine runners on base. Their best chance came in the fifth, when Dixon walked and then Olsin doubled, sending pinch runner Kylie Bronson to third with one out. However, Kaylie Neal struck out on a 2-2 pitch, and after a walk to Shollenberger to load the bases, pinch hitter Brandi Christopher struck out, ending the threat.

Coburn suffered a hard luck loss, allowing only five hits in six innings, and just four earned. Lyndsay Benson for the Aggie went the distance, striking out eight. Olsin went 3-for-4 for ISU, raising her season average to .298. The Bengals host Utah Valley on Saturday at noon at Rainey Park in their final two games of the season.
