Late Rally Falls Short as Bengals End Season with a Sweep to Utah Valley

April 26, 2008

Box Score

Pocatello, ID --- The Idaho State Bengals didn't end their season without a fight. The Bengals were down to their last out trailing 4-2 with a chance to win. Krista Armstrong grounded out to third base with runners on second and third to end the game and season. Utah Valley (11-29) also won the first game of the double header 10-0 in five innings. The Bengals end the season with a 7-27 record.

In game one, the Wolverines pulled away with a big second inning. A bases-loaded double by Magan Niemann started the scoring for Utah Valley. Hiedi Stocks capped the seven run inning with a two run home run. Utah Valley added three more runs in the top of the third to round out the 10-0 result.

Andrea Coburn was the starting pitcher for both games. In game one, she gave up six runs on seven hits in three and a third innings. She pitched much better in game two. Coburn pitched all seven innings allowing just one earned run on five hits. She also stuck out five Wolverine batters.

The best batter of the day for Idaho State was Heather Dixon. In the two games combined, she went 4-5 with a run batted in. That came in a big way in the bottom of the fourth. With Utah Valley leading 1-0, Dixon led off the inning with a crushing home run to deep left field. Her seventh home run of the season tied the game at 1-1.

However, errors were the problem for the Bengals in game two. Idaho State committed three errors in the top of the fifth inning. That led to three Utah Valley runs, all of them unearned. That gave the Wolverines a 4-1 lead. Dixon would score again in the sixth to make the score 4-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Bengals began their charge. Merissa Jannsen started it off with a double down the right side. Senior Stephanie James followed that up with an infield single. Whitney Chaffe dropped down a bunt to move both runners into scoring position. But that is as close as they got with the game ended after a Megan Miller fly out and a Krista Armstrong ground out.

Before the first game, the Bengals honored their three seniors on senior day. It was the last games for Stephanie James, Kylie Bronson, and Christine Shollenberger.
