Javier Royo Gains Lone Singles Victory at Number Two Spot

Pocatello, ID--The Idaho State tennis team started off strong against Montana state but fell 6-1 at Reed Gym Saturday morning. Idaho State fell to a 1-12 over the season and 1-4 Big Sky record. Montana State improved to a 9-11 overall record and 4-3 Big Sky record.

The Bengals won only one of the three doubles contests putting them behind 1-0 in the match. Senior Marc Pijoan and Freshman Danel Barrenechea teamed up to defeat Jakub Dybala and Kyle McDonald 8-5 at the number one spot. Pijoan and Barrenechea improve their doubles record to 4-5 for the season.

Sophomore Javier Royo gained the lone singles victory for the Bengals in straight sets. Royo defeated Dybala 6-2, 6-4 at the number two spot and improves his record to 3-9 for the season. Pijoan took his opponent Kyle McDonald to three sets at the number one spot. Defeating McDonald in the first set 6-4 he fell in the second set 6-2 before the Bobcat took the third set 6-3.

The last Bengal off the court was Sophomore Alex Buceta who fell in a close super-ten point tie breaker to Justin Hauck at the number five spot. Buceta took the first set in a tie-breaker 7-6 (7-3) but fell in the second set 6-1. Leading the super-ten point tie-breaker throughout the match Hauck continuously gained points on serve to catch up and surpass Buceta to take the tie-break 10-8.

At number three singles Barrenechea was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Pawel Turzanski. Sophomore Jeremy Atkin fell to Fletcher Keyes 6-0, 6-0 at the number four spot. David Kutchins, a sophomore, was defeated by David Kovas 6-0, 6-0.

Idaho State returns to action against Montana April 12th, at 10 a.m. in Reed Gym.

Notes: Hauck of Montana State was awarded the final point of the super-ten point tie-breaker due to a point penalty awarded to Buceta.
