Pocatello, ID--Idaho State University dominated Northwest Nazarene 4-0 in its exhibition game Wednesday morning at Davis Field. Two seniors and two freshmen scored goals in the game, both within eleven minutes of each other.

The game-winning goal came from senior and 2007 First Team All-Conference player Kilee Quigley in the first 3:06 of the game. The goal was assisted by sophomore Lauren Hough.

"I think it was a starter for the whole team," said Quigley about the first goal of the game. "The whole team knew it was just the first goal and we could get more and more and more. That first goal is hard to get and once we get it we keep going and keep pushing."

Quigley then turned around 10:17 later to assist, with junior Annamarie Hofstetter, senior Katie Miller who came up from the backline to score the second goal of the game. The Bengals demonstrated their aggressive and dominating style of play early in the game with the two quick goals in the first 13:23.

ISU is coming off a tough 2007 season where they posted six tied games and had difficulty finding the back of the net. With a season deemed "Freedom to Choose!" The Bengals are determined to get on the scoreboard early and often. ISU followed through their mantra with 17 shots in the first period alone and compiled a total of 31 shots over the game. Northwest Nazarene was stifled by the Bengals and was only able to release four shots.

"We did a lot of good things in the first 20-25 minutes. We played our style, we played our game," said head coach Allison Gibson. "They [The Bengals] did everything we've asked them to."

In the second period, two freshmen hit solid shots past sophomore keeper Pip Herman just 10:56 apart. The first goal of the second period was scored by Ashley Askwig, affectionately named "Skwig" by her teammates, in 60:35 from a pass by Crosby Joyner. Noelle Sanders jumped in on the scoring and took the fourth and final goal of the game at 71:31. Sophomores Taylor Powell and Lauren Ryan assisted on Sanders goal.

"This freshman class has been the most seamless transition to a team that I have had," said Gibson. "I credit the newcomers because they have put in the work."

Sophomore Kathryn Ford started the keeper position for the Bengals.

The dominating force in the exhibition match was co-captain Quigley, who had three points in the game, was seen pushing hard in every play and owned the midfield. Her fighting attitude allowed the Bengals multiple opportunities to execute plays and gain field advantage. Returning starter, redshirt junior and co-captain, Jana Davis-Boehler kept up her governing presence from last season with four shots against Northwest Nazarene.

Every player on both the Idaho State and Crusaders team was able to see the pitch as substitution rules were lax. Both coaches were able to see different combinations of players in different lines because the game does not count towards their regular season play. The Bengals played aggressively, but they rushed for passes too quickly and were called offsides 11 times and they were also whistled 13 fouls. Northwest Nazarene was called offsides once and had only four fouls.

One factor that was not resolved during the exhibition game was the keeper position. Since Maren Eves-Williams broke her thumb in the first week of practice the position has been open.

"I think that door is still wide open. I think they all did some really good things. They are going to keep competing and they all want to be in there," said Gibson. "Competition is going to breed success for them. We will give them some more minutes and see who emerges."

Sophomore Kathryn Ford started in the keeper position. Ford returns from a 2007 season where she saw just 19:39 of play and made four saves. During the exhibition game all three keepers saw roughly 30 minutes of play and made one save each. Ford was followed by freshman Michelle Harrison, the tallest person on the team at six feet. Harrison was followed by Bailey Williams who finished the game at goal. All three keepers positioned themselves well and made solid saves. Ford was credited with the victory.

An unexpected talent among the newcomers was discovered in the exhibition game as freshman Alex Hansen, who took six shots during the game, and junior transfer Jen Munro from American River College were seen using flip-throws to return the ball to play. The last Bengal with the ability to perform a flip throw was Jamie Meehan-Scott who finished her senior with ISU in 2003.

Idaho State opens its season on Friday, August 22, at 4 p.m. against Utah State at home on Davis Field.
