Idaho State applied consistent pressure and forced the Lobos to take two time-outs in an attempt to upset Idaho State. After a kill from sophomore Britta Bartschi to tie the game at 19-19, the Lobos went on a three-point winning streak, thus swinging the momentum in their favor to close out the set.
Idaho State fired up and headed into the second set with determination. Trailing at the beginning ISU headed the scoreboard after an 11-11 tie to take the lead. The Bengals maintained their lead until the 17th point where the Lobos scored nine consecutive points from Bengal errors to overcome ISU 25-17 in the second set.
In the third set ISU trailed the Lobos and made a valiant effort as the scoring bounced back and forth until it was tied at 21-21. However, the Lobos blocked the Bengals attempts to finish the match and took the set 25-21. New Mexico posted seven team blocks for the match and held together on the defense to post 14 block assists that shut down the Bengals while ISU only posted four.
"We were right in it until the 17th point of games," said head coach Chad Teichert. "They had a tendency to not do so well down the straight so we need to hustle more and execute."
Though ISU made more attack attempts with 124 compared to 111 from New Mexico, the Lobos were more accurate posting hitting percentages of .216 in the first, .167 in the second and .316 in the third set.
