Orem, Utah--Idaho State led an aggressive charge but could not net a goal as it had the first scoreless double-over time game of the season against Utah Valley on Thursday afternoon at Clyde Field. Both ISU and Utah Valley record their first ties of the season. The Bengals are now 2-3-1 while the Wolverines post a 3-0-1 record.

Last season the Bengals had the most tied games in the history of ISU with six, but the tie was not reminiscent of last year's struggles as the Bengals found scoring opportunities and drilled the goal with 21 shots the game-high for the season, six more than the Wolverines.

"Today it was a great battle between two teams that wanted it really bad," said Head Coach Allison Gibson. "I think we definitely had our points of domination and they certainly did. Of course I wanted the victory but today the tie was okay. They fought hard for it."

Idaho State was against the wind in the first period and took several minutes to adjust its play as long balls caught the wind and drifted back toward the Bengal goal side. ISU caught on quickly and dominated possession most of the game. Idaho State was selective in their shots as they patiently waited for scoring opportunities to record five shots with two on goal while Utah Valley posted seven shots with two on goal.

After the half the Bengals had the wind to their back and they used the advantage as they unleashed six shots on goal from 16 attempts, 13 in the second period alone. ISU kept the Wolverines to a mere eight shots, four of which were on goal.

"In soccer, it's one of those days that no matter what you do the balls not going to go in the net," said Gibson. "So you are going to hit it close you are going to get great shots, great keeper saves, it's going to hit the post, all those things are going to happen."

Unfortunately for the Bengals, everything that could keep ISU from scoring occurred. In the 58th minute sophomore Crosby Joyner had a shot that hit the right post but could not find its way into the goal. Senior Kilee Quigley had a header that rolled to the right bottom corner of the goal. The shot passed the keeper, but a UVU defender was standing just inside the goal and knocked away the shot. Junior Annamarie Hofstetter had two shots within a minute of each other but both were a foot to two feet above the cross bar. Both Hofstetter and Quigley tied for the game high four shots.

"It's hard not to get down on yourself with us stepping it up each game we've played," said Quigley about not finding the back of the net in the 0-0 tie. "I think doing that helps a lot instead of having a bad game and having it be 0-0. For us to play well is a big thing."

Freshman keeper Bailey Williams had a great performance as she recorded six saves and her second shut-out of the year. Williams' shut-out was hard fought as she had two collisions during the game. Both collisions resulted in netted shots for Utah Valley, however Williams would draw fouls because of the collisions and the shots would not count. She improves to a 1.15 goals against average.

Idaho State looks to continue improvement as they face Brigham Young Saturday at 7 p.m. at South Stadium. Live stats will be available at the Brigham Young athletics site.
