Boise, ID--Idaho State was overcome in a tight four-set match (14-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-23) against Boise State Wednesday night at Bronco Gym when BSU out hit the Bengals with a .154 percentage. Boise State improves to a 4-8 overall record while ISU fell to 3-1 in a tight four set match in which the Bengals had a first set victory then rallied back to nearly capture the fourth set.
"We've just got to make sure we learn from it, regroup and go forward," said head coach Teichert. "After they learn how to play with a relaxed intensity, playing loose and having fun. Being very focused and intense. It's quite a combination to be physically intense and be poised and have composure and stay calm."
Idaho State came out focused and with intensity as they easily took the first set 25-14. The Bengals came out swinging as they started the match with a five point lead in the first set dominating the attacks with a .242 percentage posting 11 kills with only three errors. Boise State also had 11 kills in the first set but produced 10 errors for a .025 percentage. ISU also out blocked the Bengals four to one as senior Brenda Cooper and Sarah Carson team up to post two block assists each.
Overall, junior Emily Waldron led the Bengals with 13 kills and only six errors for a .162 percentage. Waldron had 42 attacks and nine digs. She also posted a match-high of three service aces. Sophomore Sarah Carson posted a career-high three solo blocks. Sophomore Jenna Proost also posted a career-high, but in digs with 19, beating her record by two. The Bengals posted 11 team blocks containing 16 block assists. Sophomore Britta Bartschi posted four kills and recorded a career-high five digs.
In the second set Boise State found a rhythm and was able to overcome the Bengals in long rallies as the Broncos had 91 attacks and 27 kills while ISU produced 21 kills but only 72 attacks. Even though Boise State had 19 errors and ISU produced only seven, the Broncos capitalized on surprise attacks and found the few holes that appeared in the Bengals front line defense.
It was a solid defense effort in the back row that kept the Bengals in the game as they dug out multiple attacks that fired of the Bronco offense. Each dig kept ISU in a position to make an attack. Proost led the defensive effort as she recorded six digs in the second set alone. She took time off from shin splints earlier in the season but was a force against Eastern Washington and proved a struggle for the Broncos as they attempted to force the ball to the floorboards.
Boise State's height proved to be their strength as 6'4" Sadie Maughan stretched over the Bengal block to tag the floor easily at the ten foot line. She recorded eight kills with only one error from three attempts for an incredible .538 attack percentage by the second set. Overall Maughan posted 14 kills with only four errors fro 25 attempts for a match-high .400 percentage. Jeanette Jenkins was also a force to be reckoned with as she posted 19 kills and earned a match-high 20 points for Boise State.
The third set showed formidable offensive strike by the Broncos as they had rocket attacks over and into the Bengal block. Carson and Cooper continued to be a strong team as Carson posted five block assists and Cooper recorded four in the third set alone. By the end of the third set Boise State and Idaho State posted the same attack percentage. However, the Broncos found a rhythm posting 45 kills and 27 errors from 136 attacks while ISU recorded 27 kills with 13 errors from 106 attacks.
Idaho State took the fourth set on with a do or die effort as their swings loosened and allowed the Bengals to connect forcibly with the ball. ISU's service earned them multiple points as it either neutralized the Bronco offense or won the point out right. Waldron recorded two service aces in a row during the fourth set. ISU held a lead in the fourth set at 19-15. ISU tried to hold on to their lead but were overcome when the Broncos gained a streak of points.
"In game four we up 10-5, about 19-16, but you don't hold on, you attack, attack, attack," said Teichert. "I think you just have to get after it, rather than trying to hold on to it. Get after it and go for the win."
The Bengals will get after it when they return to action at Weber State on Friday, September 26 at 7 p.m. at Swenson Gym.
