Wichita, KS -- The Idaho State volleyball team put up a valiant fight in the final two sets but was unable to take a set against the Ohio State Buckeyes, falling 25-14, 25-21, 25-15 in its first match at the 2008 Best Western Classic at Charles Koch Arena on Thursday afternoon.
The Bengals (0-4) started off slow in the first set as Ohio State (4-1) led from the first point, but ISU made things interesting in the second set. There were four lead changes and eight ties in the second set, but Ohio State scored the final two points to win 25-21.
The third set was more of the same early. The squads were knotted at 9-9 with five lead changes and seven ties, but Ohio State scored the next eight points and finished off the Bengals from there.
"In Game 2, we played very well," Bengals head coach Chad Teichert said. "That's a very physical, very athletic and well-coached team. We felt real good about things. But they scored eight points in a row in the third set, and it's crazy to let that happen."
Ohio State did most of its damage on defense, outblocking the Bengals 12-3. Additionally, Ohio State's hitting percentage was .287 compared to just .068 for Idaho State.
Freshman Karissa Legaux led ISU with 20 assists, and classmate Emily Beardmore recorded eight kills for the match. Sophomore Sarah Carson led the Bengals with a .267 attack percentage.
Idaho State takes on Cal State Bakersfield at 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon in its second match of the tournament and takes on tournament host and 22nd-ranked Wichita State at 10 a.m. Friday.
