Complete Boise State Governor's Cup Game Results
Moscow, ID--Idaho State may not retain the Governor's Cup as Boise State maintained possession during the majority of the match to defeat ISU 2-1 in the Cup's opening game hosted by the University of Idaho at Guy Wicks Field Friday afternoon.
"They've got to want it and until they do it's exactly the soccer you are going to see," said head coach Allison Gibson of the defensive nature of the Governor's Cup game against the Broncos.
Boise State started the first period with the wind to their backs but it was not a deterrent. The young Bengal squad could not keep the Broncos from holding a scoring position as Boise State released seven shots compared to a mere four by the Bengals, two of which came from senior midfielder Kilee Quigley.
Boise State's Andrea Huerta, a junior, scored the first goal of the game at just 11:38 when she received a long pass from the right side and headed the ball over freshman keeper Bailey Williams. Huerta was assisted by sophomore Tara Roetter.
Exactly one minute after an injury substitution for Boise State ISU responded to the Bronco offensive attack at 29:11 when junior Annamarie Hofstetter crossed a corner kick from the left side to meet sophomore Taylor Powell who tapped the ball across the goal line to tie the game. Forward, Powell records the second goal of her career while Hofstetter tied the second best career assists record at Idaho State with a total of 17, she needs two more assists to hold the all-time school record.
Idaho State's defense was overcome by the Bronco's at the end of the first period. As the Bronco Chelsea Robinson skirted around the backline to find an open Janelle Jin of Boise State who knocked a cross shot to the left post. The Bronco's posted se
In the second period, Idaho State's keeper Williams was replaced by sophomore Kathryn Ford as Bronco Brandy Hickcox ran into Williams knocking her to the ground where the Bengal sustained a cleat to the face cutting the keeper above her left eye. Hickcox was given a yellow card for the action. Boise State played an aggressive game and four yellow cards while ISU attained only one. Also, the Bengals drew 13 fouls from Boise State and committed 16.
The Bengals shifted into high gear and maintained an offensive strike towards the final 12 minutes of competition. Though the Bengals took control of the game they found it difficult to get closer than the 20 yard line and connect cleanly with the ball as they were in a desperate attempt to get back in the game. ISU recorded only one shot in the second period for a total of five with only two as shots on goal. Boise State 13 shots in the game with seven on goal.
Though the Bengals have seen the miraculous game-winning goal in the final seconds of play, which occurred in their season opener against Utah State, the magic couldn't be found as ISU held possession just 15 yards to the left of the Bronco goal in the final 50 seconds of play.
"Our luck has run out," said Gibson. "Now we have to do the work and want to play. We need to be that team we were in the last 12 minutes. You've got to come out and be the team to be dealt with, we need to be the team that needs to be dealt with."
